I wish they would cross the 99 over with something else. I would like to check them out, but not with the JLA.
The JSA might be a better fit.
I'm wondering why DC did this. Out of all the intercompany crossovers they could choose, why an obscure team like that? I'd think if that was their goal, they'd try another JLA/Avengers, or maybe JSA/X-Men. But they've ruled that stuff out; I don't think they're even doing the old Dark Horse crossovers any more, so why THIS team, why THIS company?
They have a desirable demographic? A market DC's looking to break into?![]()
I think it's mainly to do with the moral message represented by the 99, and the fact it's better publicity in the real world to be teaming up with an Islamic super group. This is something regular news programs are going to take notice of, like the Batwoman being a lesbian, whereas a DC/Marvel team up would probably not be as widely picked up.
Looks interesting. I wonder if they'll mention the Ground Zero mosque? The timing is eerily coincidental.
I agree. It's nice to see someone using superhero comics to dispel some of the unfortunate associations Islam has gotten these days due to terrorists and oppressive regimes.
I also like the idea that this is more of an old-fashioned crossover than the kind we get today. I don't mind cosmic crises or heroes fighting each other, but only where it fits, and it doesn't sound like they would here.
Though how hard is to guess that the DC villain is Starro? And why even bother hiding it? Though I *am* curious as to why an alien abomination like it would work with a (mostly normal) human villain.
Well, isn't that bad? Like I said, unless I'm missing something, it doesn't seem likely to sell all that well, or at least not as well as some other crossovers they could have done.
Now if they have other motivations for doing this, I can understand it, but as is, unless I'm missing something, I don't really get the why of it.
As others have said, it makes them seem more progressive. Maybe they're also getting some outrageous sum of cash from the Teshkeel people for it as well, since it obviously benefits them a lot more than it does DC.
And we'll have to see. Maybe DC is hoping the appeal of a JLA consisting of big guns and not Robinson's team of pet characters will draw in DC readers.
Not really interested in The 99, but if the story looks good I'll read it. The second issue has Hawkman on the cover, and I know Nicieza's a fan of the character, so it's got two things going for it already, at least.
