Avengers Academy: Appreciation & Discussion

It's a shame that Avengers Academy still doesn't get more popular artists (quality aside) like Coipel, JRJr or McNiven.

I like the art on this more than any of the three you mentioned, though. They may not have the "names," but I'll take the quality we're getting any time.

The scene read a little heavy handed, but other than that this really has me excited!

Did you think it read a little heavy handed? I really didn't I thought it was handled well. Heavy handed, to me, would of been to have the scene happen in front of ALL of the cast, or to drill the point home without it being part of a natural conversation.

I'm not a fan of Avengers Academy's artists, but even if I liked it better than Coipel or any other popular artist, I'd still find unfair that the comics including popular characters get the popular artists.
It's the kind of politic that creates a hugher gap between the high selling titles and the others.
I can't help but wonder if Daken or Iron Man 2.0 would have been cancelled if they had Coipel or Davis as artists.

i disagree. i think he shouldnt have made Striker get molested. he should had made another character.

It seemed a little expository, I guess? To me at least. Specifically the whole "Oh, the only reason I've hit on girls for the last 20 issues is because I'm super-gay and I thought it was the best way to hide it!"

i'm not sure what to make of Runaways. i guess it was fun at the time. but i think a lot of the individual characters would have been better off not being linked to the Loners. i'm thinking of Hollow (who should never have been forced to give up her name) and Phil Urich (who suddenly had the goblin insanity tacked on to his continuity).

Actually, at the end of his solo book, it was hinted that he was being affected by the Goblin Insanity. So Loners didn't make that up.

Hollow getting a new name was understandable, since it seems it's not the M twins that are inside Hollow(And man, that stuff is confusing).

I wanted to say that, too; not to mention the issue of his solo book where he saw the ghosts of goblins past (when more than one of those "ghosts" turned out to not actually be dead). Even if you explain it away as a plot inconsistency (as in, they decided to bring those characters back much later), you gotta wonder whether the guy exposed to insanity-inducing goblin formula in his origin story might be having a problem when he starts seeing things he shouldn't.

So it's possible that he was slowly going insane anyway (not that I liked that development, 'cos I didn't).

As for Hollow getting a new name, yeah, that sucked. There was absolutely no reason they had to stop calling her Penance (as, despite the confusing backstory, she was still Gateway's penance for his part in the slaughter of Emma's prior batch of students) except that some jerk writer decided his new badass just HAD TO have that name (and doesn't even have it anymore now). -_-

However, I think of it as her Fujikawa Industries codename -- Fuyumi struck me as the kind of woman who likes to name her new toys, as if to remake them in her own image. Hopefully, she'll be back to Penance as soon as someone recognizes her.

So wow, turns out that panel in AA #22 really was foreshadowing Striker being gay! They did the whole "I hit on girls all the time to cover up the fact that I'm super-gay" thing on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, too, lol, which I'm guessing Gage had to research for his "Angel & Faith" work. Not saying there's a direct connection, just thought it was an interesting coincidence.

Except he doesn't look like Living Lightning and Striker is caucasian .

Personally, the way i saw it, his book ended with him possibly going either way. Its why it didn't bother me(And i kinda do like him as Hobgoblin admittedly).
