I'm so bored with this martyrdom routine, this halo all you X-men love to polish. Self-described soldiers adorned in an "X" with no dedication to what it actually stands for.

Me: Please Marvel, give some spotlight to your 21th century creations instead of killing them every month.
Marvel: Avengers Arena, lol!
Classy as always, Marvel.
Eh, not quite. In the era of pulps and penny dreadfuls from which Sherlock Holmes hails from is a bit of a different beast than you might suspect. A better analogue would be Tarzan. For many stories like Tarzan (and other pulps and penny dreadfuls) each chapter was released on a monthly basis in magazines and then collected in novel form later.
IE: Single issues and Trade Paperbacks.
Give Tarzan of the Apes a read (it's free these days online) and see how it handles action. No seriously, give it a read. It's amazing. Use that as a good comparison.
The followups aren't as good, of course, but there's a damn good reason it's been adapted so many times.
Overexposure did cripple Tarzan, but he's always been around because the first source was just that good.
But that's OT as hell. Fun, but OT.
Edit to add: That said, Conan Doyle honestly didn't like Holmes as a character (and Holmes as a character is more insufferable know-it-all early on) and tried to have him killed off.
But then he also liked money and enough people talked to him about it to get Holmes back.
He much preferred Professor Challenger from "The Lost World". Gotta agree there. Man's a bad scientist, but a great character. Barrel/gorilla shaped, hairy, red-haired and short tempered. He's a character. How much did Doyle love Challenger?
He converted Challenger to Doyle's religious belief (Spiritualism).
That's how much he 'loved' the character.
A more modern example is Go Nagai and his Devilman/Mazinger Z work.
Devilman is his Magnum Opus/Great Work (well, that or the manga version of Dante's Divine Comedy). At the same time, he wrote Mazinger Z to blow off steam.
Mazinger Z is far more popular, to his annoyance.
But Uncle Go is an odd sort and though disappointed, keeps using the characters in new ways when he can.

"Curse you, Occam's Razor! You have betrayed me!"
Reviewing is a lot like paleontology: the evidence is there, but no one seems to agree on it.
The Avengers Academy students appeared in today's "Marvel Universe vs. The Avengers #4", including Hollow! Mettle, Hazmat, Veil, Reptil, Finesse, etc. too. ...Of course, it'll probably be their last appearance on the alternate Earth, too, lol.
Aw. A chunk of the posts from the last two days disappeared before I could respond to some comments. Dammit.
Oh well.
When is a writer going to use Finesse? She's awesome. She deserves to land somewhere.
The thread has been cleaned, and I am happy.
I hope to see Finesse sometime in the future as well. She'd be an interesting addition to Secret Avengers, I think.

Okay so based on various requests and the fact that Academy's been cancelled for a while I've converted the News and Speculation thread into the Appreciation and Discussion thread.
This was done for two reasons:
1) To separate discussion between Academy and Arena
2) Give the fans of Academy a platform in which to discuss the run and it's characters
A couple of rules here though, if you're going to discuss Academy's characters then make it relevant to the thread and do not go into hateful tirades against Avengers Arena. Also do not use this thread for Avengers Arena news or future developments since that book now has it's own dedicated news & speculation thread amongst the single issue spoiler threads.
These are good rules to have.
If I could dump some fanart here, I would totally do so to inaugurate the revived Academy thread.
