Default The thread in which we talk about the Olney thread

Okay, folks, let's drop the bickering. The status of the thread (kept open, but not stickied) has already been decided. Let's keep any further discussion actually on topic, i.e. Olney's various ethical and legal lapses, instead of just descending into navel-gazing about how much good/harm the thread has done.

People, seriously, stop provoking Rick or they're going to close the thread.

Let's focus on the other Rick, the one who is a lying, cheating, deadbeat scumbag.

    "Descending into Navel-gazing"--? Really?

Genuine emotion and outrage over real things that happened to real people have always driven this thread. People telling true stories without censorship. An open 'forum' to discuss those aspects of comics which are swept under the rug in most forums could be revealed. Most of the best people (of those I have known personally) who have ever done comics have quit, because of literally dozens of people like Olney over the last three decades.

I dunno why CBR has chosen to eviscerate YABS by putting people with no investment in it (I read the above as contempt--TBH), but the moment you take away the right to the emotional aspect that has driven our little fact-finding missions, you KILL everything that this thread is.

Is that the goal? To limit it to weekly 'news reports''?

I've had nothing but respect for you and your opinions before now, Perry--but trying to 'fix' the Olney thread by making it purely 'fact-based' defeats what it is, and makes me think you folks don't understand it--or that CBR have genuine contempt for us.

I am not even sure if the new mods were aware that the Olney thread was the only officially non-moderated thread on YABS until their arrival. After all, it's not mentioned in the first post.

This thread has surpassed all others combined in value.
It has kept a vigilant spotlight on a crook and a bully.

You don't have to like the thread.
Nobody here is trying to get a Nobel Peace Prize.

    Don't like the thread?
    Don't post in it.
    Don't read it.

I think it is cowardly to start whining about it as soon as Gail leaves, but here nor there.

That being said, if this thread does not continue to be stickied, and moderated by those of us that have been posting in it, I will leave this board.

This thread is far from broken, so don't 'fix' it by trolling like this Rick fella, or by over moderating it, when we've done a fine job of operating here for years.

You guys wanna keep posters on this board?
Restore what Gail built and intended with the construction of this thread.

    It really is that simple.

yeah I don't get why if the majority of the board wants the thread up, the thread doesn't stay up.

And I'm not blaming Perry and BB for that... I just want to communicate the point to them.

Tom, Rick - I wasn't kidding about the bickering. Drop it or take it to PM.

    Linkara - Thank you.

James - I have no problem seeing Olney's sorry hide getting nailed to the wall for his actions. The stated goal of the thread is a fine and noble one. The problem is, a lot of the extraneous cruft that has accumulated over time in the thread detracts from that goal by acting as a distraction. Seriously, if someone was coming to the thread for the first time, how much crap do they have to wade through to get to the meat of the topic?

And quite frankly, a lot of the recent posts seem to be more in love with the thread itself that with the stated goal of the thread. It's that sort of recursive behavior that, yes, I think of as 'navel gazing'.

I don't think it's necessary to divest the emotional reaction one feels toward Olney from the thread, but I do think it's more productive to maintain a certain modicum of civility while doing so.

The4thpip - We were aware of it.

It's not necessarily as much of a majority as you might assume.

I've gotten several PM's from people who have problems with some of the behavior in the thread, but a) don't want to get publicly savaged for daring not to agree, and b) recognize that if they posted in the thread, they would be contributing to the increasingly off-topic nature of the thread, even as they would be condemning it.

Well, nobody usually has to defend it's very existence to a bunch of vulture-like cranks, who've finally found the right opportunity to sabotage. Frankly, it is they who are disrespecting you. OF COURSE the discourse is going to gravitate towards expounding the thread's virtues, if the Mod is taking a noncommittal stance. CBR Rick (a well-known walking, talking 'mood swing'--who's expressed his hatred for this thread for at least as long as I've been here) woulda been told to go away after a couple of posts under previous management, and I've never known Gail or Corrina not to read the riot act (otherwise known as 'simply suggesting') to those who CBR Rick is complaining about--those who would insult Rick Olney's family, as an example. Literally dozens of examples of such self-regulation here. If the mods don't defend the thread, it's left to us. Can you see the 'Catch-22' involved? You're complaining about us not being neutral in simply defending the very continued existence of the thread, and insulting us for it. Please, just don't mistake the perception of this thread by a few people incapable of empathy for the truth of it--such negative derailments are rare.

James, I really don't appreciate you implying that "we" have been waiting for the chance to sabotage this thread as soon as Gail turned her back.

First off let's be clear, Gail left.

It was her decision to leave, and and now that she has decided to go elsewhere there is no reason at all for YABS to continue exactly the way it was when she was here.

Secondly, I have never acted any other way toward this thread, ever.

You are right though that I only decided to bring the issue again after the change was announced. It was clear that it wasn't going anywhere under the previous management, and the only thing continuing to argue about it was that I was going to be banging my head against the wall, and doing nothing but facing the wrath of the "righteous".

But like I said, Gail left, things change, and there is no reason at all why the people who stayed behind shouldn't throw up a new coat of pain, grab a few throw pillows and change a few things.

I understand that some of you strongly disagree, but is it really necessary to do what seems to be the normal reaction from some regulars of this thread, which is to attack anyone who says anything against it as villains or fools?

    Finally, CBR Rick?

I have a new name now?

As no one at the moment seems to be actually talking about Olney, I figured it would just as well to keep the meta-discussion in another thread, where people can feel free to argue about this sort of thing.

To be clear, any discussion that is actually relevant to Olney's misdeeds still goes in the main Olney thread. Discussion about the relative merits of said thread goes here.

    Ooh, I like that version.

    It's got style.

    Thanks

And before I let it slip by, I wanted to thank you for how you've been during this argument. I know you truly disagree with me, but I want you to know that I appreciate the way you've expressed it.
