ten comics? sounds cool. and 4 boxes of duplicates? wow. i only had around 20 comics.
Most of the duplicates, I'd say, come from eBay runs I bought that included comics I already had. Others come from the fact that I'm apparently not as good about updating my want list as I should be (see also: several recent single-issue John Carter, Warlord of Mars purchases).

Well, the first Classic Comics Exchange has been completed as I received a pile of delicious back issues from Dan Bailey. Thank you, kind sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar. I'm especially looking forward to reading the All-Severin issue of Billy the Kid, as well as, for reasons I can't fully explain, Sea Devils. Some juicy stuff.

So who else wants to participate?

    Oh, count me in!
I just need to rifle through my long boxes to see what I can unload. Once I look through all of them, I'll give a comprehensive list of what I'm willing to part with.

    Great idea for a thread.

Unfortunately, that's the only issue (or, rather, of course, it's a duplicate of the only issue ... the one I sent you is the first I owned, thanks to a really cheap sale price befitting its lamentable condition at an LCS here; its replacement isn't in much better shape, really, but I think it was included in an otherwise completely unrelated eBay lot a couple of years ago) of Sea Devils I've ever owned, & almost as unfortunately it's not drawn by Russ Heath, whose work on earlier issues is pretty much legendary.

On the plus side, it's pretty darned neat in & of itself -- the story is a 3-parter starring, respectively, Joe Kubert, Gene Colan & Ross Andru/Mike Esposito, drawing themselves.

As far as I know, Scott & I are the only ones who've participated. Too bad.

It's a fantastic idea, but it also seems like the kind of thing that can turn acquaintances into enemies should a misunderstanding or problem arise. I love this place too much to put such a thing at risk. I wouldn't want to make a mistake that angers someone or, myself, feel misused by another member.

Imagine, for example, that I sent a stack of books zryson that I thought were Fine and he thought were Fine -. What would seem like a simple mistake to me would make a world of difference to him (no offense, zryson. Just using you as an example).

Essentially, I can only see myself taking the risk for a stack of books that I really knew I wanted, and that runs contrary to the entire idea of this thread.

are you and he still exchanging comics? anything interesting lately? back in the 90s i would have jumped at a chance to exchange comics with other fans but these days its simpler just going to the local stores because they have huge runs of comics from most eras 60s-upwards (with the occasional
40s/50s comic) but i really like the idea of exchanging comics. i used to do that in the 90s - i would go into a store get a certain amount of credit and then spend it on comics

I can't speak for Scott, but judging from what he sent & what I sent, we pretty much stuck to "reader's copies" -- no better than G+, if that -- for Silver Age stuff & solid-ish copies (somewhere around F, I suppose) for Bronze Age.

Unlike a lot of people here, as is pretty well known, I don't much care about condition, since my main interest in comics is to read the stories & admire the art, rather than install them in some shrine that I can bow & scrape to at prayer-time. (I have at least as many odd psychological quirks as the obsessive-compulsives* to whom anything below VF- or whatever is fodder for the trash bin or the cat's litter box, I daresay, but mine take a different form, for better or worse. Besides, I have no room to install a shrine in the house.)

That said, I definitely wouldn't want to step on someone else's toes by sending them something completely out of line with the condition of what they're sending.

*Not meant as an insult, btw. From what I've gathered, it seems to be generally accepted that fan communities in general consist of a high percentage of OCD types &/or people with varying levels of Asperger's syndrome; that very much includes me.

We've only done it the once. I wouldn't mind doing it again, of course, but to me this is definitely a "the more the merrier" pursuit.

Man, normally I'm the weird one that gets left out in the normal crowd. Now I'm considered the normal minority in a community of weirdos. Gotta get me some of that Asperger's...

Yes, I'd certainly like to get more people in on the fun, but so far it's just been me and Dan. As Dan said, it's really more about reading new stuff for me than collecting, hence the random aspect of the exchange. With this in mind, I'm not paying any attention to condition other than to try to at least make sure I'm sending people complete stories. I think one of the comics I sent Dan didn't have any staples, for instance. But all the pages were there, so he could still read it. And I have a couple coverless comics from the 1950's waiting for new homes as well.

Hopefully someone will be interested in joining us in exchanging these comics, because I've received even more random back issues since last time that I am ready to send out to new homes, including some Invaders and Marvel Two-in-Ones. Surely someone else out there wants to swap some random back issues and try something new?

I'll bundle up a new batch for you this evening, Scott. I wouldn't mind seeing at least one of those Invaders; offhand, I'm pretty sure I own only the 1977 Annual. (I've got all the MTIOs, either in Essentials form or, from around #40-on, individually. That was generally a pretty fun series, & I hope someone steps foward to provide them with a new home.)

Sounds good. And just for you, Dan, I'll make sure that Invaders issue is the one guest-starring a mentally confused Thor fighting on the side of the Nazis.
