    Default John Callahan passes away

I always enjoyed his dark humor in "Comic Relief" magazine, which I subscribed to for several years before it was canceled.

We struggled against apartheid in South Africa, supported by people the world over, because black people were being blamed and made to suffer for something we could do nothing about; our very skins. It is the same with sexual orientation. It is a given.

    According to wikipedia:
A quadriplegic, Callahan drew his cartoons by clutching a pen between both hands. His visual artistic style was simplistic and often rough, although still legible. It has been likened to that of William Steig, James Thurber, Richard Condie, and Ben Wicks.

Oh, shoot. Both the art style and the name seemed familiar to me, but I couldn't quite remember from where until it was mentioned he was a quadriplegic. I used to watch Quads! once upon a time.

    Rest in peace, Mr. Callahan.
Oh….I must say I’m surprised at how readily you boys bastardized your code of ethics in order to justify a morally dubious decision. That was very grown up of you. - Cornfed

    Bugger.

He wasn't just an inspiration, he was actually good.

One of his books had a little cartoon history of his alcoholism and how it caused the injury that handicapped him. Another was on his sex life and how he learned to have one after the accident. It's interesting stuff, especially with how unsentimental it is.

My favorite Callahan cartoon was a drawing of a sheriff and posse standing in the snow around an overturned wheelchair. Two drag-marks lead off into the distance.

Sheriff: "Don't worry, he won't get far on foot."

I also greatly miss Comic Relief.
