Default New Detective Comics writer: Scott Snyder

This was just announced over at DC Universe: The Source. I haven't read anything by Scott Snyder, but I think David Hine was doing a good job. Hopefully he'll get a new project in the Bat-universe soon.

Meet your new DETECTIVE COMICS writer: Scott Snyder

    By Alex Segura

It’s not a stretch to say one of the most recent success stories to come out of Vertigo is AMERICAN VAMPIRE, a neo-horror classic-in-the-making that has garnered critical and commercial acclaim with it’s modern and exciting take on vampires in America.

Well, bats and vampires aren’t distant branches on the family tree, either.

So, it’s with great pleasure that we announce that AMERICAN VAMPIRE writer Scott Snyder will be stepping into the DCU with a major new assignment – ongoing writer of DETECTIVE COMICS, starring Batman, starting in November. Can it get better? Sure — Snyder is now exclusive to DC Comics.

And Snyder’s no stranger to The Dark Knight, as the photo above shows. But we’ll let him get into that. Take it away, Scott:

“I’ve read Batman religiously since the 80’s, and there are many stories dear to my heart - from Year One to the Cult to No Man’s Land to Hush and The Long Halloween - but I’ve been particularly amazed by what the Batman team in general, and Grant specifically, has done with the character over the last few years. I couldn’t be more thrilled or honored to be working on Detective right now … this is honestly my dream job. As for the series, I want to play things pretty close to the vest for now, but I can tell you that it’ll star Batman, and will focus heavily on his CSI work and hardcore mysteries set around Gotham. The back-up will center on Commissioner Gordon and involve a certain case - and a dark figure - from his past that comes back to haunt him in present day Gotham. The feature and back-up will be stand-alone, but will affect and inform each other. Again, huge thanks to Mike Marts and everyone in the great Bat-family for making a place for me in Gotham - I’ll work hard to earn my keep. And please, DC Nation, let me know what you think, too!”

I’m sure they will. Thanks, Scott! And stay tuned to The Source for more news today and the rest of the week.

Nrama: Will there be any new supporting cast or new villains?

Some are from continuity, some are characters you haven't seen for a long time, and others are brand new.

So there will be a lot of new characters when it comes to the back alleys and shadows of Gotham. It's not going to be a big superhero book where there will be new supervillains with crazy costumes and gadgets. We'll instead have some real antagonists, emotionally, for Batman and Commissioner Gordon. Real crime figures that are popping up.

I want to really explore Gotham as a place that, as Bruce comes back, has changed a lot. From the crime on the street to the people who are in power.

And there will be some reveals about characters you haven't seen in a long time, coming back in a fun way.

I am paying attention now. I like what he has said.

I'm reminded of Pandora from Dini's issues. For those who follow his work, is she a good example of the type of 'new' characters that he would create?

I wonder what 'long lost' characters he will bring back. How exciting!

    I don't know Snyder's work. So I can't say anything either way.

"...for me the fun of a book like "Detective" is to give readers a balance to that. To be able to do small, gritty, kind of hardcore mystery stories that do have a cumulative effect. There is a bigger story behind the whole run and a plan in this design. It won't just be little stand alone, throwaway mysteries. I do have certain themes and ideas that will come to a head as plot points by the end of the run. But with "Detective," what it offers and offered me as a kid between the annuals and everything – I just reread that Mark Waid Annual #2 with the Ku Klux Klan – was that it was a place to go where you wanted to see Batman be the greatest detective in the world. I've loved the Batwoman run, and I've loved a lot of the stuff they've been doing with "Detective," but I'm really excited to take it and make it a run that will star Batman as the central character."

    Wow, that sounds great!

I prefer "detective" Batman over "Super hero" Batman, so I'm pretty excited for this. I like Snyder's work on American Vampire, that book has been a really fun read. I'll definitely be picking this up. I wonder who the artist is going to be.
If you're not reading Unwritten you should be.

Sounds interesting, but it's kind of wait and see for me.

Hell of a drawing of Batman there. Small gripe, a lot of times in traditional print they'd credit a photographer anytime their photo was used, seems like web sites would do the same with comic artwork.

I'm not familiar with his work beyond American Vampire which just isn't my thing but I'm curious what someone with a different perspective and some new blood can bring to the Batman world

I read the first issue of American Vampire and it was pretty damn good--so I'm pretty excited to see what Snyder will do with Detective.

The front page says "eponymous" title. That wouldn't be 'Tec.
