I disagree about the Shield. That was an awesome book, partially because of Trautman's scripts. But Marco Rudy definitely showed he's one of the best pencillers around -- hands down. The guy can DRAW.

Here's something:

Art & Comics International began as "Estúdio Artecomix", a minor art studio that was hired by Brazilian publishing giant Editora Abril to translate and re-letter their licensed superhero comics line (aka Marvel and DC both). Over the years, "Artecomix" became "Art & Comics" and became a talent agency for Brazilian artists who wanted to work on US comics.

Unfortunately (for me, at least), they're mostly based in São Paulo, making it very hard to be a comic book artist if you're not in that city (where former DC artist Mark Campos heads an art school where a lot of these Art & Comics guys teach and lecture).

Fixed the Yildiray Cinar section. He is, of course, from Turkey. You're right. But my confusion came because he's listed as being represented by the Brazilian agency.

If I mistakenly identified any other artists as Brazilian, let me know!

Tim, I've noticed a ton of international artists have jumped into mainstream comics the last 10 years:

Vitti
Caselli
Ramos

Tons more of guys from Spain and Italy, Jorge Molina from Mexica, a fantastic artist you recently interviewed.

I also love Ba and Moon, but I don't think that style will have a such a great impact, in terms of other artists trying to emulate it. Where is the next Darwyn Cooke?

Other Brazilians include Joe Bennet (Teen Titans, JL: Generation Lost), Rod Reis (inker), Jose Wilson Magalhães (inker), Diogenes Neves (Green Arrow), Geraldo Borges (Rise of Arsenal).

I know there are a lot less of them and most, if not all of them, are at Marvel but what the recent wave of Portuguese artists? If any of guys read Marvel Fairy Tales Avengers(written by C.B. Cebulski), 3 out of 4 of the issues were drawn by Portuguese artists and the recent X-23 one-shot was drawn by a Portuguese.

Give it time. The kids growing up now are definitely going to be picking up their stylistic tips from their work, the same way people were absorbing Paul Pope's work 10-15 years ago and really becoming apparent over the last few years.

Joe Prado here! First off TIM -- awesome article, and I can´t thank you enough for recognize the Brazilians work on the Comics Market. We´ve been active in the market since the late 80s, so it´s great to hear people dig our work.

Just some details I´d like to add to the who´d wanna know --

1- Marco Rudy is not Brazilian - he´s from Mozambique, Africa, and used to live in Brazil.

2- On Brightest Day I´m the responsible for doing finishes over Ivan Reis. We work on all Aquaman and Deadman section on the series. The responsible for The Hawks section are Ardyan Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes. :)

3- ROD REIS is a COLORIST, not an inker.

4- As for a list of Brazilians working - there are lot - Felipe Massafera, Oclair Albert, Eduardo Pansica, Marcelo DiChiara, Ronan Cliquet, Ig Guara, Adriana Melo, Julia Bax, JP Mayer, Mariah Benes, Jack Jadson, Ruy José, Marcelo Maiolo, Fabiano Neves, Adriano Batista, Cris Bolson, André Coelho, Eber Ferreira, Julio Ferreira, Pow Rodrix, Wellington Alves, Will Conrad, Bruno Oliveira, and MANY, many others. :)
