Default Death of Dracula 1 *Spoilers*

I should preface this by saying the only Marvel vampire comic I have read is the recent Captain Britain and MI13 arc.

    spoilers:
-Janos son of Dracula is watching a meeting for all sects of vampires held on some Greek island
-His brother Xaros arrives with Alyssa head of the Siren sect
-In the high level meeting with Dracula, Xaros stakes Dracula for his lack of boldness and is helped by the Nosferatu, Trykes and Charniputra (flying and Atlantean vampires).
-He declares himself leader but the leader of the Kriegers(dressed like Germans pre WW1) refuses since the attack was dishonorable. The leader of the Claw ( look like mystical desert warriors) just leave
-Xaros can mass produce medallions that allow them to walk in the day
    - The three sects who attacked Dracula , attack the Kriegers in their castle stronghold using the medallions and kill the leader.
-Janos turns to the Claw since he has history with them, but on confronting Xaros with them, it turns out to be a trap since Xaros was working with them from the start.
-Alyssa kisses him and slips him a medallion just as the sun comes up. He uses their surprise that he doesn't burn up to escape.
    end of spoilers

I am not sure how to use spoilers or whether I went into too much detail. I liked it a lot. I like the world building, especially little touches like Anchorites, isolationists who survive as a farming community who live on animal blood. It is kind of odd that Dracula looks so different but I'd leave it to artistic license. A lot happens in this some nice action and the plot moves forward a lot. The art is also pretty good.

Enjoyed everything but the look and writing on Dracula. No mention of his attack on the UK and in fact, they tried to paint it like he didnt like attacking humans and promoting vampires.......

On saying that, good set up that got me pumped for the upcoming event.

    I thought it was excellent.

I'm not a huge Dracula fan but I thought this take on Vampires was great and was much needed to make them more different and formidable. I think I pretty much liked all of the characters, Janus was compelling and certainly had the right amount of elements that make you want to take his side. Xarus is the typically scheming villain but has an air of danger to him.

If anything this made me want to follow where this whole vampire stuff goes so I think I'll be checking out their interactions with the X-Men. Is the X-Men book the only place where we'll see them trying to expand their reach for control or will it also be in other books?

I've never read a Marvel comic about vampires before this one, but I picked this up because of the upcoming X-Men stuff. I'm glad I did because I thought it was pretty good, and set up everything to come well.

Were all these different sects established in the MU before, or were they introduced this issue?

I think it's supposed to start with X-Men, but will have something to do with Avengers and so on later on (from http://marvel.com/news/comicstories....y_of_dracula):

DEATH OF DRACULA #1 and X-MEN #1, both by writer Victor Gischler, will both descend upon an unsuspecting populace on that day as events take place that will ultimately envelope not only the X-Men, but the Avengers and every other hero in the Marvel Universe.

Though I'm skeptical that this much vampire infastructure could exist since vampires only turned to the MU a few years ago (in marvel time), I do nonetheless think it's cool that they are fleshing out this corner of the MU.

It sort of reminds me of those Dungeons and Dragons table top games back in the day... and that's kind of cool.

I do like Janus, even though I sort of see it as an attempt on the MU's part to cash into the twilight thing, and I don't entirely understand why he's an adult vampire. But questionable continuity aside, he won me over as a character.

I'd like to see more vamp stuff in the MU, if they can get the right creative team on board.

I gave this the benefit of the doubt and took the plunge despite the bad feedback it received...

Sorry I thought it was terrible. The art and look of everyone shouted 90's to me on every page. Apart from the one mention of Stark this could have been a title form a completely different company. Dracula was taken out waaay to easily, his armour (which can be peirced by wood so thats pretty effective) looked more appalling than in the previews.

It basically disregarded all previous continuity (Vampire State, Janus as an angel, Lilith, the fact that theres never been 'Sects' before but now we're meant to believe that theres always been loads of them) and how many times did the word 'Sect' appear. Read it again and try saying the dialogue aloud...it sounds terrible.

Sorry I tried but it looks like a 20 year old throwback...this doesnt bode well for X-Men # 1. The sooner it retconned the better.

finally read it, and it was good in my opinion. they don't spend too much time on backstory and move forward the entire time. There's just enough backstory, however, to get to know the characters (despite certain parts of their past being retconned). This was a good story and I'm very excited to seeing these characters in the X-Men

Personnaly I think it was a really good issue with a good pace. The art was really good and the atmospehre too. But I never read other vampire issue before this one so maybe that's why I really like it.

Now,, I must say that I'm really excited to read the next X-Event

Several of the sects that appear have been seen before in issues of Blade (Tryks, Purebloods), Bloodstone (Nosferatu) and Tomb of Dracula (Charniputra).

They also managed to miss several existing sects like the Blutsauger, the Yiki Onna, the Adze, the Ancients, the Children of Eternity, the Uukog, etc. (although the absence of the vampire hunting Mortuus Invitus sect is understandable)

Aaaah right, didnt know that, cheers mate.

Still think saying 'Sect' over and over again really became annoying.

It could have probably worked out okay if it had been some kind of independent publication, but this book is supposed to be about the same Dracula who has been floating around Marvel for 40 years.

And nothing in this story had anything to do with that Dracula in any way at all.

It was a so-so Dracula story, but as a Marvel Dracula story it was down right awful.

Yep, the Tryks appeared in Blade's Max series and were uber vampires. My memory is a little off today but what Blade series featured the purebloods? May have been the Sears series.

Also, I'd bet we can see Janus trying to recruit the Mortuss Invitus sect to aid. Those guys were like vampire ninjas.
