    Kinda figured he would.

How does fit in with current movie continuity because say Howard Stark is 30 in this movie that would make him 100 in the current Iron Man movie.

Actually, Stark would have been about 60-ish in the film in Iron Man 2. If he was 30 in the 40's, then 30 years later he'd be 60 in the 70's. It works, I guess.

He's got big shoes to fill.

I really don't understand why they didn't use John Slattery and just young-him-up enough to be acceptable for Cap. With such a minor character you'd think they'd be ok with fudging the age issue a bit.

If the benefit of this continuity is to see minor characters connect different franchises, wouldn't it better to cast actors that can appear in both films?

I have my doubts your average moviegoer is going to be aware that the guy "Howard Stark" in Captain America is the same guy from Iron Man 2, thanks to the character not being portrayed by the same actor.

That said, the fact that they cast someone else says to me that Howard Stark isn't quite as important to the overall picture. I doubt now that he'll play any role in Avengers.

I guess that would mean that Howard Stark was 60ish when Tony was born because I would probably put Tony between mid 30s to mid 40s.
