Default CBR: Winick Humors "Power Girl"

With his first issue on stands now, Judd Winick explained to CBR how a mix of humor, action and pathos is the key to establishing Karen Starr as her own heroine with her own unique voice and villains in "Power Girl."

I have to say I was dubious about the new creative team, but I enjoyed #13. The humor is still intact and the book itself is still very much readable. I think I'll be sticking with this for a while.

Still, Winick wanted to assure fans that his tenure on the book would not be all gloom and doom, even though some observers have seemed prepared for that, even before the writer's first issue was released. "My favorite quote from the boards, which a buddy of mine sent along to me, said 'Judd Winick has ruined Power Girl.' This was a full six weeks before the book was even going to come out! That was a new one for me. All I ask is, please read it before you claim I've ruined it," laughed the writer, taking his occasionally chilly relationship with the internet with good humor.
I love how Winick and DC always make jokes about how hated his writing is. I wonder if its still funny when they look at the numbers from his Green Arrow and Titans disasters :x

I enjoyed issue 13. I thought it was funny when so many people were dropping this book when his name was announced. Give it a try, you can't assume when a creative team changes on a book that it'll go straight to being crap.

I think the first issue did a good job of balancing everything and from Jimmy and Justin's run I got this feeling that her company was only going to last so long before something like this happened. I hope that it's one of those learning experiences for PG and she is able to salvage everything.

Wow, even acknowledging the hate with a light heart (versus nasty seriousness) isn't good enough.... :-/

Thumbs up Never had any intention on leaving after #12

I liked Basri's work from Image's Fall Out Toy Works mini, so I was already sold on that half of new creative team, but I had faith that Winick would be a good fit on this book and I wasn't disappointed.

I'll say this, Winick's approachable style is far more preferable to me than say, Grant Morrison's wild and inexplicable tangents.

I wish I could say I'm shocked but, unfortunately, that kind of thinking is nothing new.

Nor can I. Unfortunatey we all know that there aren't comic "fans" out there that don't buy books yet talk about how bad they are on internet forums! That'd NEVER happen! And NONE of them are here at CBR!

I'm just saying I find it hilarious how they act like the dislike he has is some internet-fad, when its more like a comic-fan majority, evidenced by his most recent output(Titans/GA/BC) selling abysmally low and being critically lauded.

And hey, in the end me and Winick are both having a laugh about how disliked he is

Maybe stop joking about how bad people think your stuff is and step up your game? Which maybe he's doing, JLA: Generation Lost is receiving some positive words so maybe he's found his niche with a co-writer or not trying to do "serious" comics and sticking with more lighthearted stuff. If reviews keep being positive I'll go check out JLA: GL. We all want more good comics, but apparently Winick doesn't put out what enough people to float a monthly title find "good".

If he can change that, good on him. I wish him the best. But for the moment based on his modern output which I have read, when I see him on a title I cringe and lose my interest.

Oh they've seen it. That's one of the reasons he's on Power Girl in the first place. (And has a co-writer in his other main book. I'm starting to think Giffen could co-write with a Chimp and it would come out brilliant)

I wonder what a Power Girl written by Simone would look like...
