Question The Marvelman (aka Miracleman) Megathread

Why hasnt anymore light been shed on argueabley one of the biggest announcements of the year for Marvel. We havent heard any feedback from writers and artists, who will be attached, whats the story, what branch it will go to and even if we'll get original trades.

    When will hear KIMOTA again?

The last time Joe Quesada chimed in he indicated it was a slow-burn project. They are still talking with previous creators, like Neil Gaiman.

There is definite interest in reprinting previous runs as far back as Mick Anglo's original stories. It's a lot of legal mumbo jumbo, I imagine.

I think they made the announcement of getting Marvelman shortly after acquiring the rights. Quesada and co. want to make sure that wherever Marvelman shows up next, whether as part of the Marvel Universe or in his own sandbox, will be thoroughly thought out as to not cheapen the character and what he stands for.

I feel that in order to bring Joe Q and Marvel's reputation back up to status quo after the Disney thing would be Marvelman. If Neil Gaiman were to continue, it would leave new comers in the dark. However, if reprints were issued that would be smart. Alan Moore said he is impressed with Marvel again so we'll see if he is willing to jump back on

I imagine they’re playing it safe until the Disney stuff is finalized. It seems to be a little vague as to what Marvel actually bought (it might just be the Golden Age stuff) so I suspect that Marvel doesn’t want a lawsuit from Todd McFarlane or someone to cause The Mouse to rethink things. Of course, once they have Disney’s backing, those resources are going to come in handy in dealing with anyone that comes out of the woodwork to halt progress on the Moore collections (which are the only reason you’d want Marvelman in the first place).

From what I understand, Marvel has bought the rights to the character. They could start publishing new Marvelman stories tomorrow if they wanted. I think it's the older material where they have to go around and make sure everyone is in compliance before reprinting it.

Marvelman was 'one of the biggest announcements of the year for Marvel'? Really? In a year where they announced that they'd become part of Disney? I don't even know who Marvelman is.

I would imagine it will be down to legal paperwork. There really are a LOT of people to contact over this, who did parts of Marvelman for Warrior and Miracleman at Eclipse, who need to be in on this to reprint the whole lot.

Gary Leach for example, creator of the Warpsmiths. He's not been mentioned yet.

And hopefully Alan Davis will get the cut he should always have been entitled to. But which he never saw when the character was taken over to Eclipse, by Moore.

Even last week I saw Alan Davis refuse to sign a Miracleman Eclipse trade, at the British International Comics Show. He was very polite about it, considering, but they did effectively steal his work on that.

They could start publishing Marvelman stories based solely on the 50s material; any influences from the revival (which, in all honesty, is the only thing that makes this property worth paying for) have to be settled with the artists.

Yes it is ONE of the biggest announcements this year. Obviously it's not THE biggest but it's up there. You not knowing who Miracleman is doesn't make the character any less important. Kind of like how some people not knowing about Watchmen didn't make those books any less important.

So what if you don't know who Marvelman is? He's still incredibly significant and it's still huge news.

Most people today don't see the big deal about Captain Marvel, but that doesn't change his (very immense) historical significance.

I think it's something that they want to make sure they get right, so they're going to take their time and make sure everything's perfect before going ahead with anything.

Since Disney is more evil than Marvel this stuff isnt be going to be moving forward for a loooooong time. The deals might have to be reworked.

Watchmen is important (because of how it affected the genre and the fact that it just had a movie) but whether it's big entirely depends on how many people it matters to and this property obviously hasn't had a lot of lime light in a while so it's not exactly a big deal.

I don't see the big deal at all about Captain Marvel today and I know who every single one of the Captain Marvels is, Marvel and DC, and the context they were created in. Marvelman I conversely know nothing about and I can tell you about the most Z-list characters in DC and Marvel at the drop of a hat.

Where has he been? Why is he a big deal? Who the hell is he?
