On one hand I'm glad that they are so sure of the character that they think it will become a successful franchise. I hope it is a phenomenal movie that has several sequels.
On the other hand it seems kind of presumptuous to be working on the sequel before they even have the first one half-way completed. Although they can get the movies out faster if they are prepared to begin shooting as soon as they see how the first movie is received by audiences. Plus this keeps the stars from getting involved with other projects and delaying production on sequels.
Regardless I'm glad that DC has decided to move past the Superman and Batman only mindset they've had about their movies and television projects. There is a whole universe of amazing DC characters that deserve attention. Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Capt. Marvel, Capt. Atom, Firestorm, Atom, Green Arrow, Dr. Fate, Blue Devil, Legion of Superheroes, JLA, JSA, Blue Beetle, and Booster Gold are just a some of the characters I'd like to see on the silver screen. Although only 3 or 4 of the ones I've listed are likely to ever hit theaters, with Flash being an almost definite at this point. Still there are just so many other possibilities for movies. I think it would even be cool to see a Suicide Squad movie. I'd also really like DC to explore the shared universe idea that Marvel is using for their characters.
Justice prevails... evil justice!
It's good to know that Warner Bros has a lot of faith in the Green Lantern movie, but this does seem to be jumping the gun a tad, but nobody has ever accused Hollywood of making decisions based upon rational thinking.
But this is only a deal to write a script, not an actual script. My guess is they'll wait until the first movie is released, find out what elements audiences really respond to, what works, what doesn't, and tailor the sequel's script accordingly.
At least that's what I hope this means.
Why? Honestly, I approve of Marvel trying it and experimenting, but I honestly think it will either fail, or not matter at all. I'd rather the films be kept separate from each other. What if the Catwoman film and Superman Returns all took place in The Dark Knight universe?
I say just focus on quality and keep each movie universe separate. There can still be a Justice League or a Superman/Batman World's Finest movie without a shared universe.
That's just my take. So far I haven't seen anything to show a shared film universe is a really good idea, or that audiences will really care, and there's a lot of ways it can go wrong. What if they have a film so bad it needs a reboot? Should they reboot the whole shared universe? Go all 'soft' reboot with it?
I think DC/WB is doing well now as is. Well, not quite. They really need to up the number of films they get out. Marvel has how many out now? I think DC has 5. That's not enough. Well, six with Jonah Hex now. If you count Vertigo it goes up more.
A lot of people get sentience confused for sapience. Your hamster is sentient, you are sapient. Intelligence is sapience.
While I am delighted that Warner is pushing the DC films, I thought the Oz films were to replace the Harry Potter films.
You want I should bop you with this lollipop?
I'd imagine that's still a long term goal, but with a Green Lantern film already in production and a pipeline of films forming (Batman 3, Superman, the Flash) the DC films are in much better position to take Harry Potter's place. The Oz books are never easy to adapt and actually have a precarious box office history.
Good to see they're thinking ahead.
