    Default JMS on Superman

So Superman 701 and Earth one Superman is going to be written by J. Micheal Straczynski

I'm only a casual fan of Superman but with him writting Superman. I told my lcbs to hold two extra books for me.

I think I'm looking forward to the Earth One Superman more then issue 701. How's about you? What do you think?

I'm not too sure. JMS is brilliant, but usually writes in a slow burn style that is kind of hit or miss for me, depending on the arc. I'm excited though!

I never got into the New Krypton story, so I'm really looking forward to JMS's run. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.

My problem is JMS has shown he will sacrifice character for sentimentality and he's clearly very sentimental about Superman. Just because you love a character doesn't mean you're the best person to write it.

I have to agree with WorstThingUS on this one. I'm not sure if JMS will be good for the Superman book

Better then Not liking or not getting the character. JMS is a very talented writer. I would rather have a OKAY writer who loves the character write him then a strong one who doesn't.

But we don't have to make that choice. JMS is a strong writer who loves the character. How can this be anything other then, pure WIN?

Look what he did for Thor!

Can you cite some specific examples of what you mean?
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

My take on him is that he will sacrifice action FOR character and emotion.
Which is what makes his Brave and Bold so good.

For some comic readers, more action the better, but to my style, I like the emotion part of Superman and sometimes it's his character that makes me enjoy him so much, whether it be dialog or just how he handles a simple situation when simple isn't always easy. Of course, the brawn and power is a plus as well as the history of Supes, but things like Identity Crisis, or Secret Origins, or the first half of a story like "For Tomorrow" where it touches on emotional standpoints brings me in even more as a reader.

I hope JMS's run is a fun run for the ride!

A lot of action in comics doesn't really work. I wouldn't trust a recommendation from those some comic readers if I was you.

The best book I read was Astro Polyps and that book had no action and it was very fun to read.

JMS is the first writer in a long time who I've seen on a Superman comic (with the exception of Morrison on ASS) who actually appears to have a love for the character. Johns liked the Superman toybox, Robinson didnt get a chance to write him much. I remember Steve T Seagle talking, all those years ago, about how he was practically forced on to the book.

Even Paul Cornell said he signed on to action "For Lex".

Let's give him a chance instead of second guessing his possible mistakes, eh?

JMS' Thor run was awesome and I have trouble believing that his Superman would be anything but. I think it's going to be great!

YOu know there's a cliche criticism of writers who do different stuff with characters that goes something like 'you ruined that character'.

But with JMS it's actually true. He actually ruined Spider-man. He did a story where he died and a thing where he reveals his identity to the world and neither of them were good or well thought out. Spider-man came back to life in a cocoon. I'm not kidding. That means Spider-man can't die and he's a moron whose actions have no consequences.

How can you look forward to him on Superman? He ruined Marvel's most popular character! Please, I beg you...

Frankly, one doesn't have to like a character in order to write said character well. And in most cases, it's better that way, since writers who fawn over particular characters tend to write them with blinders on to their more obvious flaws.

But we don't have to make that choice. JMS is a strong writer who loves the character. How can this be anything other then, pure WIN?
    Exhibit #1: Spider-Man: The Other

Exhibit #2: Superman needs 'a road trip' in order to put him in touch with himself? That already sounds like a boring navel-gaze story, which the character definitely DOES NOT NEED.

Look what he did for Thor!
Yeah, let's look at what he did on THOR...he left suddenly after he had a tantrum over sharing the character with others in a crossover. Great example!

Do we need more red skies in order to see a clearer picture of what is to come?

Mark Millar did a little story called Civil War where Peter Parker reveals himself to the world. Hardly fair to blame JMS for a mega-event spilling over to his book.

Plus, the unmasking really was just set-up for Quesada's bright One More Day devil deal story.
