Default Recommended Reading: Back Issue bin and Out of Print edition

This thread accompanies the other recomendation threads and it's about single issues and out of print TPBs and Graphic Novels. For anyone who wants to go deeper in the Spider-Man mythos.

You have 10 votes. Vote for older stuff, stories that have not been collected, out of print collections and graphic novels don't mind accesibility and significance.

You should however prefer complete storylines rather a single issue of Maximum Carnage for example. For that reason I may have to make some judgment calls, but we will discuss here if the complete story should be included or not.

This is an ongoing poll and I will edit my post, as long as votes still coming.

Your number 1 choise tkaes 5 points, 2 - 4 take 3 points, 5 - 7 take 2 points and 8 - 10 go with 1 point. You are free to change your votes though please don't make it a habbit

This is not Chris Nowlin's 25 Greatest thread, though I should give him some credit for inspiration.

Just a note. Try to avoid recommendations that you're also making in the best trades thread. It's kinda redundant to vote for the Spider-Man/ Human Torch collection there, and the mini-series here.

Some Out of Print Trades that will make my list...

    Spider-Man: Wizard Masterpiece Edition
A hardcover collection of some of the best Spider-Man comics ever. "Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut." The Cobra/ Hyde follow-up. "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man." The Death of Jean Dewolfe. And David Micheline/ Todd Mcfarlane's rematch between Spider-Man and Venom.

    Spider-Man VS The Green Goblin
The infamous drug storyline, "The Night Gwen Stacy Died," a Lee/ Ditko classic and the conclusion of JM Dematteis/ Sal Buscema's Harry Osborn Green Goblin saga.

Spider-Man: The Origin of the Hobgoblin
I searched for this TPB for years, before I found a bunch for half-price at a comic convention. It's Roger Stern's original Hobgoblin saga.

Peter Parker Spider-Man: One Small Break
This one includes Paul Jenkins's two best Spider-man stories: the introduction of Fusion (easily the best new villain since Venom) and the tragic request of the Robot Master.

    Amazing Spider-Man: digital Collection
The product they stopped making, because it's too good a deal. The interface kinda sucks, but it still has the first 500+ issues of Amazing Spider-Man.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

    The Wizard hardcover seems great!
The Spidey vs Green Goblin is a great pick, I have this one. I think I'll maybe put it in that list.
And the Hobgoblin TPB is nice, but then comes the conversation if we should include the Hobgoblin lives mini here.

If you like it, why not?

Personally I'd put the 1990s Roderick Kingsley Hobgoblin stories as a seperate product from the early 1980s Roger Stern Hobgoblin stories. The difference in price for the back issues is just too significant.

It's a damn shame that both aren't in print now. "The Origin of the Hobgoblin" would make an excellent Marvel Premiere Classic hardcover.

To be followed an year or so later, by 'The Hobgoblin Lives' a collection which includes the mini-series and the Spectacular Spider-Man Norman Osborn VS Roderick kingsley story.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

Actually, the ASM on DVD-ROM edition is not out of print.

I paid much less than what the price is at the moment, but it's Amazon so the price might drop. But even if it doesn't, it's still a good deal all things considered as it's ever ASM up to about 2006 for the cost of a year's subscription to the current ASM.

For those of you who don't like to buy online, I've seen it now and then at big box retailers, but that's usually around the time of a movie being released. If you want to get your hands on it, Amazon it probably the best way.
And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say.
And I hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way.

Can't really put an order. My number one, for some endearing reason would be Coming Home by JMS. And hey, Peter was single in that one...kind of.

Harry Osborn Saga (Spectacular Spider-Man #178-184,189,199-200)
Death of Jean DeWolf (Spectacular Spider-Man #107-110)
Amazing Spider-Man #248 The kid who collects Spider-Man!

    All of these are great.

There is also a hard cover called The 10 greatest Spider-Man Stories Ever Told. That's got some great stories including "Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut" and ASM 248.

Kraven's Last Hunt is worth reading.

Until the Stars Turn Cold was fantastic! So was Sins Past

I enjoyed One Small Break which is a Peter Parker Spider-Man TPB.

Um... there's too many. I own like, all of them since i wasn't alive till 1987. Oh, i anything Peter David did in the 80's with ASM is great, My buddy loves Peter David and put some of his stories together for me. This was after we argued over David as i didn't love his FNSM stuff.

Oh man this is fun... i'm gunna look through my stuff and find some good ones for this thread.

Oh hey, the first Paper Doll story in BND was awesome!!! See, i can be impartial... and the Rhino stuff in the guantlet was good too. Stan Lee's back story in ASM 600 was probably my favorite post-omd story.

Oh how could i forget The Death of the Staceys hardcover.

I recommended it earlier due to the content, but I finally bought a copy of the Wizard Masterpieces Edition collection.

Holy shit, is it awesome. Just a solid collection of some of the best Spider-Man stories ever, with limited but useful commentary.

Haven't seen this but it sounds pretty solid and a good way to check some great stories, pretty cheap.

Ok, i am going to try to pick some not so well known ones. I would count the original RS HG stories amongst my all time favs though, but want to highlight some that are not talked about so much, well, apart from the first one which is pretty well known.
I have never read the Death of Jean Dewolff(for shame), i missed those issues, really have to get onto tracking that story down.

    1. 'And There Shall Come a Firelord...' ASM 269-70. A truly fantastic Spidey story that shows him coming back from the brink of giving up and betraying his promise to the memory of Uncle Ben, to having one of his greatest victories.

    2. Marvel Team Up 82, 83, 84, 85
Spider-man and Black Widow, Nick Fury and Shang Chi master of Kung Fu

A truly epic spy thriller from Chris Claremont and Sal Buscema, and has a very sweet love story between Spidey and Nancy Rushman, the persona that the Black Widow inhabits as she has had her memory wiped for the duration of the story.
If Marvel had the film rights to Spidey and wanted to do a big team up movie with other heroes, this would have to be the one they adapted, the first issue of this story is one of my all time fav Spidey issues.

    3. Marvel Team Up 68 Spidey and Man-Thing

from Claremont and John Byrne, Spidey fighting off despair and fear that is brought on by the mystical powers of his supernatural foe D'yspare. A major battle fought in the backwoods swamp for all existence, classic issue.

    4. Web of Spider-man 52 'Chains' The issue where JJJ tries to escape from his captivity at the hands of the Chameleon. Spidey only features in a couple of panels swinging past a window, but JJJ is such a classic SM character, this has to make my top ten. Flashbacks show the young Jameson coming to terms with the harsh realities of life as a crime reporter, while in the present day he valiently fights for his life.

    5. Web of Spider-man 34 'The Cosmic Gambit' - I have always had a soft spot for this story. It reads kind of like a Twilight Zone or something. *minor spoilers, just telling the set-up...* An alien criminal finds a weapon of Galactus' floating in space, uses it to break into the Watcher's base on the Moon and holds him hostage, wanting to know how to access the Watcher's weaponary which would enable him to conquer the universe. The Watcher refuses initially, but then offers to gamble the weapons in return for the Galactus weapon. Out of all the events taking place in the universe at that moment(all shown on the Watcher's screens), the alien chooses to gamble on a game of football a handicapped Spider-man is having with some local neighbourhood kids, the fate of the universe hanging on this simple game, which the bulk of the story concerns itself with.

    6. What If? 19 'What If Spider-man had never become a crimefighter?' Spidey stops the thief, Uncle Ben lives, Spidey goes onto become a huge Hollywood player and major asshole. One of the best WI's ever.

    7. Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-man 79 'The Final Battle' - the ultimate Spidey vs Doc Ock issue, as he defends Black Cat from his attack on her as she lays in hospital.

    8. Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-man 80 'I cover the Waterfront' - another JJJ solo story, although Spidey does feature in the background of this one. A great Film Noir type tale, with JJJ playing the Bogart role of private investigator. Great scenes such as JJJ playing the Kingpin at pool while he negotiates info from him(blowing cigar smoke in Kingpin's face, coolness), and a funny ending.

    9. Marvel Team Up 69, 70 - Spider-man and Havok and Thor
The Living Monolith story, and the first time Spidey has a one on one team up with Thor, so hilarious moments of interplay between Spidey and Thor, terrific artwork from Byrne(the storm in the harbour), ties nicely into an Avengers tale of the time also. Just rollicking King Kongesque good fun as Spidey and Thor try to take down a massive Giant stomping through NY.

    10. Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-man 118

Ok, I changed my vote on this one, as I prefer the more emotional stories, and the one with Saturday Night live is more of a fun jokey story, nothing really substantial there.
This one is a bit of a shocker though, Spidey trying to help a superpowered kid who has accidently killed his father. SHIELD are after him, and the kid can't control his powers. So, it's all about Spidey trying to calm this kid down, while fighting off SHIELD agents. I will say no more about this one, written by Peter David.
