What are the best and most accessible Spider-Man TPBs?

Are there any plans to print The Gauntlet as an omnibus? I missed a few storylines in the "arc" and would really love to have them all in one volume.

so far no plans have been stated, but I would think it would be a good idea.

I'm going to cut short the poll portion of this thread, due to a general lack of interest in that aspect. This kinda makes sense, given the haphazard reprinting of the Spider-man comics, which don't translate to TPB form as much as many of the best Batman stories (which are more often than not self-contained TPB length storylines.) So many of the great Spider-Man runs are available in multiple formats.

And the current format of Amazing Spider-Man results in the latest TPBs having multiple creative teams.

Just list your favorite Spider-Man trades, with an eye towards accessibility.

Don't worry about ranking the stuff. Although explanations will always be appreciated.

One thing that should always be noted early is the asm dvd or cd-rom. By far it is the most cost effective, accessable, and easy to get into. While the cd-rom may not have all of the best ever spidey stories it sure has the majority.

I think the jms stuff should have a disclaimer. While some people here are great fans of his a newer fan may not enjoy the title if they are looking to see spiderman take on his classic villians. I would think a new spiderman reader would like to see classic fights and not the sweet relationship with aunt may and mary jane.
Maybe all the recomendations should have a pros and cons attached with the recomendations.

If i had to list my favorite trades id go with marvel masterworks 1 & 4 The first volume of course presents the origion of spiderman as well as the green goblin and doctor octopus first ever appearances. Volume four collects one of the very best ever spiderman stories, the master planner saga as well as the green goblins identity revelation.

For some new readers want some fun, pretty, accessible, great modern Spidey, I highly recommend JMS/JRJR 3-year run on the book. Its my favorite Spider-man run, remains rather solid throughout with some great stories here and there(Coming Home, Doomed Affairs, Digger, Happy Birthday, Book of Ezekiel). You can buy them either in the recently released Ultimate Collections

I only read one large arc for Spider-man, but I recommend it whole-heartedly: Kraven's Last Hunt by DeMettreis (sp). Best buried alive and enemy mind frak in a main stream comic title.

Top props and proves that Mary Jane will go above and beyond the call of any and all superhero wife to stay loyal to Peter. She also immediately notices something amiss about the "new Spidey" in this arc and yes, stop "him" from boinking her because she could tell he wasn't Peter.

Is there like a "New X-Men" style run for Spidey? Like a great team working on a good set of storylines, modern book, not too continuity heavy?

I finished Ultimate Spider-Man, but have been scared of getting back into mainstream marvel because every time I try to I hear about some crazy shit going down with parker, lol

The JMS/ Romita Jr run probably comes closest. There's some good stuff and new concepts, although in my opinion they never reached the heights of New X-Men.

You really can't put together a definitive list until Marvel finally reprints the Stern/JR Jr. stuff from the 80s. That to me is the best Spider-man run after Lee/Ditko/Romita. Really the Spider-man titles were pretty consistently good in the 80s, as often Peter Parker and Web of Spider-man were nearly as good and at times even better. Some of that stuff like Kravens Last Hunt and the McFarlene stuff has been in print, but bunches of it hasn't been.

I'd say get the first six Marvel Essentials Amazing Spider-man, which is the first 137 issues and annuals of the book. Pretty much most of the big characters were created and introduced within the run.

I can't speak from about 1990 up to JMS run, so I would let others talk to those.
