spidey is a real avenger
wonder man has only had one cool scene ever(mollywhopping wolverine)
spiderman is a notable avenger
Mighty avengers was a lot of fun with hank pym
they label me a villain cause of how I express my feelings
I thought Thor sucked until his recent badassness in Siege.
FAdam K- How do you read comics and sit around on this board and not know who Gorilla Man is after the last couple of years??
Boycott #1 issues!!!!!
Where is red hulk's moustache?
Steve's Cap costume is terrible.
I'll agree on the no such thing as a "real Avenger". Unless we mean stuff like the Dark Avengers.
But there are classic Avengers. Long standing members like Hawkeye, Scarlet, Wonder Man, Quicksilver, Vision, and the founders definitely count as that, among a few others.
My controversial opinion: I don't like Disassembled. I disliked the Bendis Era of Avengers for a while, but I've always agreed on one thing: there were aspects about the Avengers that had gotten stale. The romance issues of Scarlet/WM/Vision and Hank/Jan were just dragging the title, for instance.
A breath of fresh air was needed at the point of Disassembled. However, it was the execution that caused the controversy and hate. The idea was strong, but how it was done was inexcusable.
What Morrison did with the X-Men, Bendis did with the Avengers. However, it is the execution that separates them. That, and Morrison's changes were just plain too drastic for Marvel to handle.

But there have been some mainstays. Those are the classics.
However, when I hear "I want classic Avengers", it's not just the line-up they are talking about. It's the storylines, story structure, tone, mood, concept, etc.
I'm not saying they are right, but term "classic Avengers" goes beyond roster.
As for the Kooky Quartet that many people like to bring up: The Avengers were just a dozen issues in or so. I don't think there would be nearly as much of an uproar as you'd think. Not nearly as much as there was when New Avengers hit.
Oh and Thor is not, in fact, unbeatable. If he loses a fight, he lost. Get over it. Everyone loses sometime.
Bendis' New Avengers run was great, for the most part. It did something different with the team and sparked interest. Now we have different teams for those that prefer their Avengers a certain way.
Warbird is a horrible name. Sorry, Busiek.
While Civil War caused a lot of controversy, I thought it was an interesting idea.
There were cries back in the days of Cap's Kookie Quartett to return the original Avengers... in practically every issue the letter's pages begged for the return of Thor (who was in a long-on-going Trial of the Gods story arc in Asgard), and Iron Man, and the Wasp, but very few asking for Giant-man.
As things turned out, it was Hank Pym that returned first, followed by the wasp, and Cap cut out only to return occassionally, as would all of the "big three". That is, except for special events like "Avengers Day" when the Black Widow was inducted, in about issue #45 or so.
That's right! Al Gore invented the internet, let's all go kick his ass!
I got your inconvenient truth right here, motherf*&¨%!

civil war showed cap fighting with a right wing viewpoint.
That's not so controversial. Wonder Man is clearly despised by the vast majority of Avengers fans/readers (if these forums are to be believed).
That said, I think:
1.) Wonder Man is one of the best Avengers ever, and my personal favorite. He has a fascinating origin story rich in Avengers history, which was mined quite well in his 90's solo series.
2.) Julia Carpenter is by far a better character than Jessica Drew.
3.) Alpha Flight is Canada's version of the Avengers, not their version of the X-Men! Not sure where that ranks on the controversy scale, but it's always annoyed me when AF and the XM get compared...
4.) Force Works could have been an awesome book had they kept the original art team, concept and roster around longer. And not been derailed by "The Crossing".
