    Default Should Magma be Flying?

In last week's issue of X-Men Legacy, us X-Men fans were treated to this panel:

    MAGMA FLYING!

There is apparently an outrage among her fandom that this new development is completely impossible considering her previously established powerset. And yet this is not the first time we've witnessed Magma utilizing her powers to fly.

Is it impossible for Magma (a girl who controls lava and fire) to fly?

Do you enjoy Magma's newly established powerset?

Is this all Greg Land's fault? Or dare I say it, Mike Carey's?

    Do you not care?

Will a thread about Magma actually make it past page 1?

    YOU DECIDE!

I say let her fly. She's basically the X-Verse Human Torch anyway. Has she even done anything cool with lava lately?

I don't understand WHY she randomly flies for the past few years in various background appearances, but I can't say that I want an entire ongoing spinoff series explaining how and why she does. It would sell 3 copies, and probably not even to me.

SCIENCE will surely give us the answer. let us examine how the human torch can fly:

"By providing thrust behind him with his own flame, the Torch is able to fly in excess of the speed of sound." (wiki)

it appears that in order to fly, she must be able generate thrusting flames from under her feet or possibly her ass.

yes, this is how science works.

let us see if she can

Powers: geo-thermal powers allow her to assume an energized form in which she radiates heat and light, can ignite high temperature flames, cause and direct seismic upheavals, summon molten rock to the surface as lava or small volcano mounds, and project "magma blasts" by superheating rock or stone and then mentally launching it at her foes (uncannyxmen.net)

ah, I believe we have it.

    brought to you by SCIENCE.

Sur we've all heard of Secondary-Mutations. Look at Emma a telepath that can turn into Diamond. How can some one do this from a telepath's point of view, does she just think herself into diamond?

She ain't no Jean Grey/Phoenix with godly telekinesis.

Same way as how Sunspot started to fly or Warpath....

Is Magma back to being Amara Aquila or is it Alison Crestmere still? has that whole Nova Roma/british kidnapping angle been resolved?

Wasn't her weakness that her powers wouldn't work when she's not touching the ground?

awesome weakness. so with that logic she shouldn't be able to use her powers if she's wearing any shoes.

that is the second best character weakness I've ever heard right behind hal jordan's old weakness to a freaking color.

Its stupid. She is tied to the earth and lava. She isnt a female Human Torch and should not be flying

that was the first thing CC retconned back the minute he got her under his pen. She is Amara Aquila of Nova Roma as of X-treme X-men

Actually that brings up an interesting point!
Can she use her powers while jumping? How about standing on a buidling rooftop? Do things like concrete prevent her from using her powers, or does she need to be actually touching the earth?

she doesnt need to be touching the earth. She's raised magma from the ground into the air to break her fall while she's fallen. Her powers are tied to the earth in that its strongest when she's grounded. That kinda makes sense. She doesnt have as much control when at higher elevations

Sunspot, Warpath, Magma...someone should make a thread about which New Mutant will learn how to fly next.
