Default ‘Kick-Ass’ director in negotiations to helm ‘X-Men: First Class’

    http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/...n-first-class/

"The script comes from Jamie Moss based on Bryan Singer’s treatment."

I think Matthew Vaughn would make a great director for the X-Men franchise, however the above quote just breaks my heart. I really really wish they would scrap "Bryan Singer's X-Men and reboot. They are doing it for others so why not X-Men too.

I don't know why anyone would want to work on a Fox Studios franchise. Sure there's the money and a hot property to work on, but it's seemed more trouble than it's worth to work for a guy like Rothman. Those guys have their fingers stuck in the pie more than most studio executives and the final output never gets to be the director's vision. If I was just coming off a successful film I'd pass on this.

    From Deadline:
Fox Seals Deal For Matthew Vaughn To Direct 'X-Men: First Class' And Sets June 3, 2011 Release Date

    From Variety:
'X-Men: First Class' to arrive June 3, 2011 - Matthew Vaughn is directing Fox prequel for studio

With Matthew Vaughn now on board to direct, studio has dated the pic for release on June 3, 2011.

Moving aggressively, Fox says production will begin this summer, although a cast hasn't yet been announced.

Bryan Singer, who conceived the story for "First Class" and directed the first two "X-Men" pics, is producing with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.

"I've been a fan of Matthew's since 'Layer Cake," said Singer. "He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-Men universe. I feel the combination of this story and his vision will make for an exciting and original X-Men film."

All told, the first four "X-Men" films grossed a combined $1.53 billion at the worldwide box office. Franchise is based on the Marvel Comics series.

"First Class" chronicles the beginning of the X-Men saga, before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto and when they were discovering their powers for the first time. Close friends then, the two men worked with other mutants (some familiar, some new) to stop a global threat. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

"'X-Men: First Class' presents an exciting opportunity to further explore the history and relationships of these beloved characters. Matthew's combination of talent, verve and vision is perfectly suited to the task," Fox prexy of production Emma Watts said.

I was hoping this would get so kicked about that the rights would fall back to Marvel, never mind roll on another humdrum effort to keep a licence.

Well, Vaughn has clearly proven to be a hell of a director so maybe he could get the franchise back on its feet after the very lackluster X3 and Wolverine films.

Come on, I hope the Mimic appears on the big screen.

Also, a better movie than X3 and Wolverine.

Wasn't he originally supposed to do X-Men 3 and then he backed out?

i was all good with this up until i read:
The film will open June 3, 2011.
No way. That's BARELY a year from now. Either that date get's moved or the film will be crap. Remember, at least 1/2 the reason X3 was so terrible was Fox honcho Tom (Tim?) Rothman was adamant about it getting into theatres ahead of Singer's Superman. I think they cranked it out in, like 10 months?

Thor and Green Lantern are already filming. Captain America is about to start. This doesn't even have a cast! Is there even a script???

Spend the time. Do it right. Don't just keep churning crap (X-3, Wolverine) 'cuz it makes money. The law of diminishing returns is gonna kick in here sooner or later if the quality doesn't pick up. (I also wish i could believe Fox isn't simply keep these things in the pipeline to maintain the rights...)

I have no interest in this. Fox is a bunch of Jackals.

    Considering it's a prequel, he probably won't.

While I have yet to watch Layer Cake, Stardust and Kick-Ass failed to do it for me. They both had cheesy elements that just failed to make it into either category of "funny" or "entertaining" for me.

A script has been in the works since Wolverine came out. Actually maybe before then. Still that's not a lot of time.

I'm not stoked about this one really. I think the first X-Men was a good start. I don't see why the need to go back further other then the fact they don't want to re-negotiate contracts with the old cast. If there's Sentinels in it I might go see it but I'll probably skip this one like I did with Wolverine.
