Default CBR: Hama Returns To "Real American Hero"

This summer, IDW Publishing relaunches the comic that birthed the entire G.I. Joe franchise with Joe creator Larry Hama returning to the continuity of his original Marvel run. CBR News spoke with the writer first.

Wow, I'm kind of shock to see Cobra winning during Hama's old run of the series.

Still it should be interesting to see how the Joes get out of this one.

I'm disappointed that Storm Shadow will be back with Cobra.. I liked his eventual defection to the Joe team.. hopefully it will happen again.. Hama can bring in the new ninja threats and have them be Cobra's go-to assassins..

I totally agree...however, I'm wondering why the Image/DDP continuity is being scrapped. Sure, it had its slight faults, but it really went a long way to get me back into reading GI Joe again!

On the flipside, the new IDW series' have been totally flat, in my opinion. Maybe I'm just an old dinosaur that clings to years & years of continuity. Oh well....

If only they could get Mike Zeck to do the covers....

No word on my favorite characters Flint or Lady Jaye in that interview. Were they in the Marvel series?

Flint & Lady Jaye were very much a part of the Marvel Series. Lady Jaye was unfortunately killed off during the DDP series that continued Marvel's original continuity.

I'm sure with their popularity, they'll be included in the new series. I think Hama is just referencing the more classic, original characters.

I can only think of 3 possible reasons for this.

    1. Because the DDP continuity wasn't really a direct continuation from the Marvel series. The DDP series had a few elements that were taken from the 90's cartoon and merged with the past continuity of the Marvel series.

    2. Because Lady Jay was killed off in the DDP series.

    3. This is just a theory/wild guest on my part, but it could be that the upcoming new G.I. JOE animated series (which will be airing on the kids network formerly known as DISCOVERY KIDS) might be a lot more closer to the original Marvel series.

Considering GI Joe shut down, while COBRA didn't......kinda makes perfect (awesome) sense that COBRA'd win.

It also featured characters from Action Force, like the Red Shadows.

I just hope Hama brings back Kwinn! If Jason Todd and Bucky can do it, so can Kwinn!

On a side note....what kind of art style does Padilla have? Is it more realistic, like the current IDW Cobra series or more cartoony like the current IDW main series?

I'm thinking of this G.I. Joe series as something akin to the X-Men Forever series.

Because I don't think they should consider the DDP series non canon.

But that won't take away from me enjoying the series.

I didn't know that the Red Shadows originally came from the ACTION FORCE comic.

Yep, this series is indeed similar to XMF. I have to wonder if this series will perform much better (sales wise) then XMF when it comes to the other JOE series.

I thought the IDW series was its own canon as well.
Ah well, at least Hama's gone back and re-read a bunch of the older stuff, not just as a refresher, but to get back into that writing style.

But then IDW is hardly known for making smart decisions as we saw how they utterly alienated transformers readers with All Hail Megatron.
