Kong was just there as a bit of contemporary fan-service, and the Pete/Eddie relationship was screenwriting 101. You have to have him fight Venom in the third act, so you have to introduce the relationships first.
Spectacular was a really good show. My main concern is that this new show is just going to exist to sell toys, like the 90's show.
Not that that Spider-Man mask/web-shooter combo wasn't a good toy in it's day--I'm just sayin'.
This news had sadden me greatly, and I'm not even that big a fan of spider-man on a whole. I mean watching over the Spectacular Spiderman was one of the most enjoyable Animated TV experiences ever. The caliber of writing and design execution is only surpassed by Batman TAS and Justice League. These producers and writers put so much effort into creating a Spiderman that appealed to every single fan of Spiderman, from the old 60s run to the Ultimates line, if you were in anyway a fan of Spiderman there was something to love. And while it did have great fan appeal, and some fan service the artisitc direction on the Spectacular Spiderman was simply beautiful. I sight Gangland (The opera episode) as one of my favorite TV episodes of all time.
I don't begrudge this new Spiderman, or even that its drawing form the Ultimate universe( which I love), I just am disappointing that we are losing such an artisticly creative cartoon in a time when children's cartoons are simply crap at their best. With that in mind my only hope is that they will keep the same writers from Spectacular to pen new stories in this series.
I guess with all this talk of the 90s show I'll add my two cents. No doubt it was a good show, and I actually preferred it over Batman: The Animated Series back in the 90s. But at the same time, it really did not age well at all. Between the hammy dialog, stock animation, and ridiculous censoring like laser guns, time didn't do it justice.
Spectacular Spider-Man was really shaping up to be one of the best animate Super-Hero shows IMO. A couple more seasons and I really think it could've rivaled Batman: The Animated Series. But I suppose now it has to join Invader Zim in the "Too Good to Last" Department.
I also have to say, the concept sounds like Marvel and Disney are trying to ride off the wave of Batman: Brave and the Bold.
Spectacular Spider-Man is cancelled, this isn't something I accept well
There were supposed to be three more seasons, Peter and his class were supposed to graduate, we were supposed to have the freaking SCORPION (oddly enough, he's my favorite Spidey villain, many of his stories are the greatest) in season three
Spider-Man & Spider-Friends were released both in the same year, so I will still hope for Spectacular to go on, it must be done, they must do it, they shouldn't let a genius work of art using some elements from "Ultimate Spider-Man" fade away
RIP Spectacular Spiderman. You were Marvel's answer to Batman:TAS.
At least,i am happy that we had 2 season full with quality, action and drama.
"I am Loki Scar-Lip, Loki Skywalker, Loki Giant's Child, Loki Lie-Smith. I am Loki, who is fire and wit and hate. I am Loki. And I will be under an obligation to no one."
Mourning the passing of another Greg Weisman penned show. Gargoyles, 2nd W.I.T.C.H. season and now Spectacular Spidey (I've still to watch Gargoyles). The writting, catchy theme song, Cheek's designs, Norman Osborn, sound effects of pumpkin bombs, fight scenes, the PERFECT Gangland, Spider-man's humor: all hallmarks of a great show.
I started reading UC Spidey because of this toon.
And life goes on...
And it wrapped the Goblin mystery well, building up for the enter of the Hobgoblin who should be Kingsley, except that they made skinny a bulky guyAt least,i am happy that we had 2 season full with quality, action and drama.
I haven't seen this quality Spidey since the 90s, though I can't really wich one was better
As for ulti spidey. I'm not that thrilled about that. They should have continued this and added other heroes slowly on the way. If Spidey will be around heroes all day team ups will likely not be so appreciated. Thet doesn't mean it will be bad though
