What should they have learned that they apparently have not? And which last Popeye movie? The Robert Altman film from 1980, or Popeye's Voyage: The Quest For Pappy from 2004?
I didn't see enough info in this story to draw any conclusion as to what they may or may not do wrong.

i'm little bit surprised about this announcement. I thought the popeye franchise was quite dead, but i'm interested how it will look like.

The same could be said for Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry or Mickey Mouse. They've all been dormant for considerable periods of time. The truth is that the real classics never stay dead forever.

The Fleischer Popeye shorts are some of the best cartoons ever produced.

That said: a Popeye movie is a bad idea. Popeye is PERFECT for 8-minute shorts, but can't sustain a 90-minute story.

Then, of course, there are the concerns about smoking and violence -- any new Popeye is likely to be pretty toned-down from his roots.

Have you not seen the terrible robin williams popeye movie? He's a great character for shorts...but it gets old after 8 min.

And more violent? Seriously? Popeye isn't about violence.

Except for the cartoony fistfights. Like when he punches an alligator into the air and it lands as a set of luggage.

lol. I always loved that gag.

But it was never graphic, nor should it be. The action was their for gags not for the sake of being violent, if they made it made more realistic it would sort of ruin the whole point.

I never said realistic violence....but even so, are you going to tell me that a Grindhouse style Popeye wouldn't be sick as f**k?

Anyhow, I just really hope they don't make it moral and NON violent...like Popeye is this grizzled sailor, and through the course of the movie he opens his heart and learns to be sensitive. I want to see him beat the shi* out of Alligators so bad they turn into luggage.
