Default CBR: Christopher Nolan Will Head "Superman" Film

The director of "The Dark Knight" will produce a new screen franchise for the Man of Steel based on a screenplay by David S. Goyer that takes Superman, Lois Lane and the rest in a brand new direction while also keeping them separate from Batman.

i'm sort of relieved about the separate universes thing. i honestly could never see a JLA moving working, plus i don't think Bale would be into that idea at all.

sounds like DC will have yet another movie that will be better than most of the Marvel flicks.

The Dark Knight is one of my all time favourite movies. Let's not forget Begins, The Prestige, Memento, or the upcoming inception!

Cautiously optimistic. Am hoping the "I only know what's worked for us" comment is just a reference to the separate universes thing, not an indication that the Superman flick will be thematically or tonally similar to the Batman movies -- I liked Burton's Batman movies, but his Superman pitches were horrifying.

I don't think it's too much to ask for a Superman who is relatable without being whiny, who can be challenged without resorting to Kryptonite as a deus-ex-machina, and whose supporting cast is deep and not (too) wacky.

I didn't dislike Superman Returns, but Lois was too weak, Lex was too wacky, and Clark was too bumbling. Smallville did a great job on both Lex and Lois, but I can't stand the alternately-whiny-and-sanctimonious Clark.

I'm probably not alone in thinking the Timm/Dini Superman toon did a great, accessible job of retelling the origin, grabbing the salient bits of Byrne's reboot and throwing in a few other twists to tie everything together (Brainiac partially responsible for Krypton's destruction). While I certainly don't want to see a by-the-numbers repeat of that version of the story, I think it would be instructive as a basic idea for a good Superman origin.

This is the worst idea since letting Bryan Singer make a Superman movie.

I have to wonder if his "only hero in this universe" take is just how he's approaching it. I can't see WB just abandoning their plans for a cohesive universe after all the fanfare around announcing it. I have a feeling it's just for the purposes of the standalone films, Nolan is not looking to add other references.

I'm very open to a fresh take on the character, and I hope Nolan gets a solid director who has vision.

I believe Bale's said the only way he'd be involved with a JLA movie is if Nolan was involved.

......btw, Nolan's involved (producing, maybe even directing) with the JLA movie now.

    Can't say I'm surprised.

I knew everyone was jumping the gun saying Nolan was going to direct the Justice League feature, and that DC would be basically copying Marvel's game plan. At least I never got my hopes up.

I knew that they would want to do something to differentiate themselves from Marvel. Making each film take place in its own universe is certainly as different as it gets.

Hopefully DC's upcoming comic book movies are strong enough by themselves that they don't need the support of cross-pollination to maintain interest with the fans. At least this puts to rest my fears of seeing a Superman/Batman buddy film (in reality, the two characters would probably despise one-another).

I almost think it might be a mistake for the writers of Batman to take on Superman; two characters whose ideologies could not be more different. The two properties are so fundamentally different that I doubt that someone could turn in a completely different point-of-view for Superman than they did for Batman. What works for Batman almost certainly would not work for Superman.

More than likely the decision to attach Nolan & Co. to Superman is only in the hopes of riding on the coattails of success of The Dark Knight. And trusting Goyer to solely write the script seems an even bigger mistake, God forbid he's chosen as director (or Superman may very well turn into the nightmare that was Blade: Trinity).

I'm interested, though, as long as they don't make Superman "dark 'n edgy!!"

Just PLEASE don't let Goyer direct. And get a co-writer in there!

Nolan's shown excellent craftsmanship in the past, though the Superman character is a bit outside his usual storytelling style. Overall I'll say it's encouraging.

Please let there be a villain other than Lex Luthor and no frikkin' Kryptonite Island and no super-powered bastard offspring.

Will Superman be facing bank robbers or someone who can actually challenge him? Who am I kidding, we all no its going to be luthor for the billionth time. Maybe Nolan will make Supes gritty and realistic. No powers!

I took that line as the style he and his crew handled Batman. Not dark in tone but creative style. If that's right than I look forward to this very much so.

Personally, I still think they should get Mark Millar to write it. His initial pitch sounded great but I don't know if Nolan wants to jump into another franchise/trilogy situation. Who knows...

Really excited about this. Nolan's take on Batman is excellent, in my opinion, and if he can duplicate that transition to the big screen for Superman in an equally competent manner, then I think we'll all be in for another great comic book adaptation.

wait, so if he is involved in a JLA movie, why would he want to make the individual movies in separate universes???
