    Default Recommendations?

    Hi all,

Introduced myself in the newbie thread, but thought my question might get lost in the pile!

I've turned up here looking for guidance as to what is around from those in the know. :) I must admit I have a preference for the older heroes, and will pick up an older title if it is going through a renaissance (in recent times I’ve enjoyed Bendis’s Daredevil and JMS’ Thor as well as Hellblazer, but also new titles such as The Boys) and I hope that you guys can point me in the direction of more titles going through a purple patch (I will certainly pick up JMS’ Superman and Wonder Woman when they debut), or seem likely to.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    In terms of older characters...
The entire Avengers line is re-starting in the coming months, with at least four new #1s: Avengers, Secret Avengers, New Avengers and Avengers Academy.

Thunderbolts begins a new era in May with #144, seeing a change in format of the Thunderbolts program as a concept.

SHIELD begins in April, and chronicles the centuries-long struggle between SHIELD and HYDRA.

Wolverine: Weapon X, surprisingly, is one of the best books on the market right now. It's written by Jason Aaron of Scalped fame, who is also adding Astonishing Spider-Man/Wolverine to his resume in May. Fantastic Four is also highly recommended, written by Jonathan Hickman (who's also writing SHIELD). His other book, Secret Warriors, is not to be missed.

Iron Man: Legacy, set to take place during various points in Stark's history, begins in April.

An ongoing Black Widow book also starts in April.

The Thanos Imperative begins in May and is Marvel's new self-contained cosmic event.

Doomwar is a Black Panther/X-Men/Fantastic Four/Deadpool sociopolitical battle royale as the ousted former King of Wakanda gets help from his allies in an attempt to win back his throne. Doom is written as a scary mofo, and it's great.

Sean McKeever's new young Marvel heroes series, Young Allies, begins in June.

Kathryn Immonen's five-issue weekly mini-series Heralds, starring a large grouping of female heroes from the MU, hits in the summer.

Checking out the JMS Superman and Wonder Woman runs sounds aces, and I'm planning to do the same, but don't forget Marc Guggenheim begins his tenure on Action Comics in March.

Azrael is pretty aces, as is Batman and Robin. The upcoming Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne also looks fun.

Spider-Woman is also a winning title.

For newer titles in similar veins to stuff you enjoy, check out the following. The first trades are either out now or will be released soon.

    - The Unwritten by Mike Carey and Peter Gross.
    - Sweet Tooth by Jeff Lemire.
    - Doktor Sleepless by Warren Ellis and Ivan Rodriguez.
    - RASL by Jeff Smith

Upcoming Vertigo books that might tickle your fancy:
    - I, Zombie by Chris Roberson and Mike Allred.
    - American Vampire by Scott Snyder, Stephen King and Rafael Albuquerque.

Great recent mini-series off the beaten path:
    - Pax Romana by Jonathan Hickman.
    - The Nightly News by Jonathan Hickman.
    - From the Ashes by Bob Fingerman.
    - Black Summer by Warren Ellis and Juan Jose Ryp.
This just in: Chris Sprouse has pulled out of Orson Scott Card.

Thanks, Brother Justin, some very interesting titles there! I shall sample the Avengers re-launch titles and DoomWar looks a most intriguing title!
