FF was the first comic I ever picked up and have not stopped loving it since (and that was way back when john byrne was on it and she-hulk was the things replacement). Good to see the things braching out a bit with the new avengers, that's what sold me on it.
I'm so &#@%ing pumped to see Ben finally getting some love. I've seen people asking who the leader of the New Avengers should be, well here he is! And no sad Avengers Assemble call for the NA, IT'S CLOBBERIN' TIME
Trolling an apreciation thread?........Pretty lame. If that's what you're given to, then may I direct you to X-forum? You will be welcomed with open arms.
I'm not trolling. I'm just asking a question. If he's so great, why can't he carry his own title? He's just as recognizable as the other Marvel icons, right? He's about as interesting as the Hulk is, probably more interesting then Thor, yet he doesn't have his own title.
Well Combustible Pumpkin , let's go back to a time when the Thing did get a lot of fan love. My first exposure to the Thing, or Marvel comics at all, was in the Fantastic Four arc where Doctor Doom has taken over the Baxter Building in FF#39-40. It was a time when Stan and Jack were sort of experimenting with stories that would build upon each other and the predominant mode of storytelling at the time in comics was pretty much a "done in one" structure. The events that started in the FF's first defeat at the Frightful Four in FF#38 precipitated a storyline that would last from that issue with a tie in to FF annual #2 and until the rematch and defeat of the Frightful Four in "And Lo, There Shall be an Ending" in issue #43.
This is one of Marvel's early epic one on one battles and it is one that probably that is still a stinging memory to Doctor Doom. This is such a great battle rendition by Kirby I just had to add it here.
Finally, the Thing gets through the last of Doom's weapons..but the victory does not come without its costs. Ben would leave the team and then end up being used as a tool agaiinst the FF while under the Wizard's device that made the darker, more primitive side of his psyche the dominant one.
If I was The Thing, I'd be really ticked off too. The rest of them stood by and watched Ben fight Doom? Losers!
Yeah, Ben was the first one to get powered up again from one of Reed's gizmos. The others were still too weak to fight at first but as you can see from the dialogue, Reed could have stepped in during the fight. You could make a good case for Reed being a bit manipulative there, letting Ben take out his anger on becoming the Thing again and focusing it on the fight with Doom. Obviously, Ben felt a bit used by it all and that's why he briefly left the team.
It was a wild and crazy adventure involving Starhawk, Her, Ben, Alicia, Moondragon, the High Evolutionary and Counter Earth. I forget a lot of it. Moondragon tried all sorts of martial arts moves on Ben to no avail. So Ben spanked her.
Maybe she should have picked up a dumbell, works for Shatterstar.
