I've found he tends more to subvert them while simultaneously playing into them. At least as far as the books have gotten so far. I'll leave it at that -- you still have no idea what the hell I'm talking about, right?

TV shows based on books suck, because i read people discussing characters who i read about 6 years ago.

As a writer myself, I like to subvert AND play with tropes as well, so there´s a remote chance I might know what you´re talking about. ^_^

I meant from a spoiler POV.

I'm going to put this in a spoiler box, even though it's not really a spoiler. Like, you read it, not gonna fill you in on anything that's gonna happen, just some basic thematic stuff.

    spoilers:
The Stark kids, for the most part, are basic fantasy tropes. Distressed maidens, girlish badasses, ancient secret wizards, probable hidden kings and the like. The main difference is they go through a crapload more pain and suffering than the average 10 year old in a fantasy novel. And this could still all be wrong, there are a couple books left, but as it stands so far, for most of the kids, this could be a D&D module.
    end of spoilers

I'm sure I'll feel that way eventually. I ran through the series in the interim.

I think ill just stop reading threads on the show.
I've seen the arguement so many times about whether or not you can spoil something from a decade ago, but people always say "I wonder" or "I hope that" and im thinking
"Well, i know exactly what happens, but i can't say anything."

I do admire people's ability to be on the internet and not go look up spoilers themselves though, i couldn't do it.

Natalie Dohrmer (?) was Anne Bolyne in The Tudors. Which I found slightly ironic given spoilers:
the fact that pressumably the Tyrells are stand ins for the Tudors. Who managed to come up the middle and seize power when the Lancaster and Yorks were fighting.
    end of spoilers

Dohrmer also had a brief part in Captain America.

For all their scheming and maneuvering, the Lannisters are ham-handed children compared to the Tyrells. The Lannisters are more the type to force a square peg in a round hole whereas the Tyrells are much more finesse and willing to mill the peg down to fit.

And the Martells are even more devious. They'd just as soon drill another hole for the peg and take the original out of the equation altogether.

The Tyrells and the Martells play the Game of Thrones with an eye on the end-game. The Lannisters (with exception of Tyrion) barely look more than 2 moves ahead.
Stay away from the chimps. You can't reason with them and you'll just end up with monkey shit all over your clothes.

Indeed, and these differences become incredibly obvious as the books progress. I love how the show s illustrating the game though, and I can't to see it really progress.

The characterization of the families has been great so far.
Even non book readers at my workplace who watch the show really get a feel for the distinctive personalities of each of the presented houses.
The Tyrells haven't been fleshed out as much yet, but we can see they are definitely able to make compromises in order for the game to play out smoothly.

That's why I really hope we eventually get a Ramsay Snow to establish House Bolton as different degrees of messed up and not just one guy acting solo which it will turn out to be if they merge Ramsay into Roose.

And what is really ironic is spoilers:
that there is a good chance that Margaery will end up executed for an adultery she didn't commit in the books.
I always thought this was a possibility, but seeing the producers (who do know how the story will end) choosing her for the part made me nearly sure of it
    end of spoilers

Shes hot, looked better in tudors, she lost weight since then.
