Really really really want this to be good.
Because i really really like the books, and i need something new to watch, and HBO doesn't have much else going atm.

If the series becomes a hit and goes on to multiple seasons I wonder how faithful they'll stay to the books given all the death and how some characters completely disappear for a book or two and how some very minor characters became the stars of future books.
I HOPE they stay faithful to the death part of that equation. There were VERY few deaths that weren't plot influencing.
However, they can skirt around the character drought issue by simply going to later books and inter weaving them into the current narrative. As a matter of fact, I get the feeling that Danerys' story is going to *have* to play out that way.
They may not need to do it at all in the first book, really. Good spread around on the narrative there.
But, by god, spoilers:end of spoilers
Sean Bean better not make it to second season.

Stay away from the chimps. You can't reason with them and you'll just end up with monkey shit all over your clothes.
Internet hypocrisy #47: Being the undisputed scourge of trolls until the troll supports your side of the debate and then becoming silent.
I would be okay with flashbacks featuring dead characters in later seasons, if they feel that it's necessary to remind viewers of key characters from time to time.

HBO has killed off main characters before, and i would guess Martin has some kind of approval process in scripts.
Also, i don't see how they can do some of the stuff without keeping the deaths in.
And certain things that happy in the first book will be more of a selling point for the show then anything else.

Im really looking forward to this. I have been since I saw the announcement a few months ago. Sky atlantic have been advertising like crazy too so I just get more excited. I dont think it will flop. One of the great things is the GRR Martin is getting involved. Its good to see hes influencing it and when the original writer is excited surely there is something good in there.

I haven't read the books, but the hype and what I hear of this series alone has me hooked. Even though it's not Arthur-related, let's hope this makes up for the disappointment that was Camelot. I need to check out the books if I like the pilot.
I can't emphasize picking up the books enough. They are fantastic, and this is coming from someone who does not read a lot of fiction. But whatever the case, I have no doubt that it will be far better than Camelot. Though to be frank almost anything is better than that horrible show.

Has anyone caught a CGI clip of "The Wall" yet? To me, that is the most impressive architecture in the book series. I hope they CGI it to make it as large as it sounds in the books. I also look forward to the onscreen version of the castle on top of the cliff that houses Catlyn's sister. (Been too long, I can't remember what it's called.) I have yet to see anything in the previews that disappoints me. I just hope people watch it. I thought Rome was excellent but I know that HBO almost cancelled it after season one because not enough people watched it. I truly hope the fantasy/historical theme brings in enough viewers. Before Lord of the Rings, these types of productions always met miserable fates. I hope that Hollywood's recent revival of these types of products has caused enough people to give it a chance.
I forgot about that. That's true. He wrote for television for many years before he sat down and grinded out these Game of Thrones books. I don't know how much he was involved in the production process but HBO certainly puts him front and center in a lot of the previews so I hope his experience helped the production process.
I'm quite sure HBO will have no qualms about killing whoever needs to be killed according to the story, or spotlighting which characters need to be spotlighted. Characters missing for long stretches? I don't see that being a problem.
Now I could see A Feast For Crows and A Dance with Dragons being interwoven for TV since my understanding is that they run at least semi-concurrently. But that's still several years of "will they or won't they cancel the TV series by then?" away.
