Default CBR: Azzarello & Morales Ride DC's "First Wave"

Brian Azzarello and Rags Morales spoke with CBR News and shed some new light onto DC's new pulp-comic crossover title, "First Wave," which features Doc Savage, Will Eisner's Spirit and a different type of Batman.

I bought it mainly because it had a Jungle Girl in it. While I enjoyed the well written and drawn story, Rima seems more like a Nature Girl than a Jungle Girl. Since it's a pulp adventure atmosphere, Rima should be in a leopard pattern costume.

I enjoyed the first issue of the comic and appreciate that it set up many plot threads to follow. Not sure what I think of the take on Dolan, but I'll ride with it for now. The art was certainly nice and I look forward to this series continuing. Nice to see the guest stars at the end of the first issue.

I just wish they weren't spinning off other titles so soon. It's too much too soon, just like Prjest Superpowers. You want to get into this new universe and suddenly you're expected to shell out for several titles/month. I really think they should reconsider this startegy. I think a better idea is to go with a much thicker monthly volume, an anthology of sorts, 42 pages like comic books used to be, thus keeping in line with the pulp feel they're going for. In a year or 2, if a character is uber-popular, then expand.

the art looks great but I'm still waiting to see how it turns out...Azzarello output can be mixed from great to lame...

This is excellent. I find Azzarello's noir writing boring at times but his pulp writing here is top-notch. And the art is stellar but that was to be expected.
Spirit, Doc Savage, Blackhawks. With Rima and Batman.I think DC just found the perfect way to have these heroes shine. It's also nice to read this just after reading the Rocketeer collection.

i was wondering, what decade does first wave take place in?

i mean, they dress like it's the 1940's but one of the characters used a cell phone and in the background of one of the panels i saw a guy with an afro.

No particular age, think Batman: TAS. Airship & computers, tommy guns & cell phone.

I was seriously bored with it.

It may just be the whole "pulp" thing but it bored me to tears.

While the first issue was primarily set up, I did enjoy it. The art was spectacular for this book, and I really think Morales shined the birghtest when illustrating The Spirit. My main concern here is that Azzzarello ma be juggling too many plot threads to manage in one 6 issue mini-series. If he can pull that off successfully, then this will be an enjoyable pulp series.

Finally got arounf to reading this last night and I relly liked it. Nice pace, cool story, decent action. Thouroughly looking forward to exploring this universe. I love the concept no powers but still having some elements of weird in there. Definately more entertaining than the standard DU. Now if they'd just add Green Arrow and Sandman and make it a 42 page monthly anthology I'd be a reader for life.
