Default CBR: Darick Robertson Dedicates Himself To "The Boys"

As Dynamite Entertainment's superhero satire moves into its third act, the artist who co-created the skull-cracking agents tells CBR he'll be front and center starting with March's "The Innocents" arc in a wide-ranging interview with exclusive art.

    Unhappy

I'm guessing that the Innocents A) get routinely portrayed as naive imbeciles, and b)end up getting slaughtered en masse by Butcher or the Seven or both.

One aspect of this series I can't grasp is why Mallory's face is being intentionally obscured in the flashback stories. This only makes sense if we've seen his face before while posing as another character, but nobody in the book seems to fit that profile so far. I suspect Mallory is supposed to have infiltrated the Seven posing as Black Noir, but since that character has never taken his mask off(plus the fact that his actions, especially in the early issues, don't make too much sense if he really is Mallory), keeping Mallory's face hidden comes off as a bit silly.

Nothing wrong with imbeciles getting slaughtered

I'm very happy to see a Dynamite title, or any Independent title on the home page of CBR. At least for a while. It'll inevitably be buried under Siege or new DC comic book news, but let it feel the sunshine while it can.

I've been enjoying The Boys in trade for quite a while. It's a great series. A little too heavy on the sex stuff, but the plots, the characters and the humor make it a great read. Bring on trade #6 already. I need to catch up w/ these guys.

The Boys have been pretty much divided between hit, miss and so far off the mark it's not even funny. But when it works it usually works best when Robertson is doing the art.

I'm kind of getting bored with the treading water arcs leading up to the inevitable throwdown between The Boys and Voight-American. I'll hang on a while longer, but Ennis needs to move the story forward.

Boy, I hope not!! I know that in the world of The Boys, most Supes are monsters, but I'm hoping that we meet a few who are nice people who genuinely want to help, like Annie is.

As for Mallory, I always assumed that they've kept his face secret b/c they're just waiting until we actually meet him. I don't think he's undercover. Could be wrong though....

Darick, you couldn't pick a better person than Garth to "stretch" your skill set as you do in "The Boys".

Do you have a favorite moment you've drawn in the book so far?

I would say it’s still [the rape joke] in issue two, seing what he does on command. Getting that dog just right and drawing the little dog’s reaction [to being raped] was fun and gratifying to get the reactions. But the book is full of moments I’m proud of pulling off, and I think the road ahead is going to be full of even more.
There’s even little cartoony pain stars from the raped dog’s butt! Not OK, guys.
A lot of the goodwill that Ennis built up with me over the years (with Tulip, for example) disappeared on that page.

I found the gag clueless, insensitive, not to mention tired and “done” and when a joke about something so horrible falls flat, so does the entire conversation and sometimes the entire friendship.

I’m sure there are attempts at jokes that would provoke a similar reaction from you.
