you know all modern humans on the planet share a small genetic marker of a common ancestor right?

A quick google search will land you information on a study done by one Allan Wilson.

"Allan Wilson and his team compared mitochondria DNA (mDNA) in people of different racial backgrounds and concluded that all modern humans evolved from one ‘lucky mother’ in Africa about 200,000 years ago."

Since then several others have come to similar conclusions. Ah genetic mutations.... if only they were like X-men....

To be fair if he isn't immune then that kind of makes OMIT even dumber, as he doesn't actually gain anything from the deal. Unless you subscribe to the idea he wanted to get rid of the marriage because of some future kid, but that kind of makes Peter look bad. Plus doesn't actually take into account children out of wedlock, or the possibility of remarriage.

Also that makes me think that OMIT would work better without OMD having happened. Sure it still has a ton of issues, but at least it makes Peter look better. Plus it makes a bit more sense (of course the villain having no motive and the story having no endgame is still a problem.).

A few short rants about the whole premise of this thread:

    1. The question of how to explain OMD to a child is concern-trolling at its most threadbare. The idea that children need purely inspirational stories without a hint of moral ambiguity assumes that kids, as a rule, are dumber and more impressionable than any child I've ever met. Besides...I was raised on Greek mythology more messed up than most of what happens in modern comics.

    2. Aren't we bored of OMD yet? Come on. We need another outrageous retcon just to make the internet interesting again for Spider-fans.

    3. The persistent discussion about whether Mephisto is identical to Satan tends to overlook the flimsy scriptural basis for the kind of capital-D Devil that alarmist preachers imagine. We can thank John Milton and the popular imagination for producing a singular charismatic tempter, the biggest big bad, who can be projected onto everything from the snake in Eden to the being who taunts Jesus in the desert to the beast of Revelations. Mephisto is a loose interpretation of a loose interpretation, owing more to the story of Faust than anything in a sacred text. The posts about whether he's the real devil ignore the oddity of certain varieties of American christianity in which thwarting the Devil has somehow become more important than serving the other big guy...or, you know, actually reading that book that explains all this stuff.

700 is supposed to be something huge that is going to be internet breaking so maybe. Though even then, as long as it is canon it will be a talking point, like the Death of Gwen Stacy or the death of the (original)Scarlet Spider, or Sins past.

    Totally the same thing.
This is totally unrelated, but I thought you'd given up on message boards so I'll post it here:

I didn't see the twist at the end of part 5 of Ends of the Earth coming at all even though all the clues were there. Nicely done. I'm also really digging your explanation for Sandman's powers and your updates of all of the classic villians. Seriously, this is by far the best Sinister Six story ever.

On topic, since I hate to post here without weighing in. I consider what Peter did in OMD to be beyond wrong. This is due to my Christian faith rather than just hating a comic book story. I actually disliked Bendis's explanation for the Sentry's powers in Dark Avengers even more.

I'd explain it to a kid like I explain it to anyone else. "Marvel broke Spidey and MJ up." (Usually followed up with, "Here, read this. It's got Hobgoblin and Venom in it.") It's just so much easier not to get into specifics.

Maybe it'll be revealed that Aunt May killed Ben because she found out he was Peter's real dad. That would make some heads implode. Or Peter will "die" wake up and find Gwen Stacy lying next to him and realize that everything that happened since her "death" was all a dream. I mean since Gwen is in the new movie, now is the perfect time to bring her back. Plus it would get rid of the Gwen/Osbourne kids that caused alot of fans to convulse with hatred.

I don't think so. To do that, Marvel had followed JMS' OMD idea.
