My main introduction to them was via Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's brilliant "Superman and the Legion of Superheroes" in Action Comics. I'm hoping that the new ongoing by Paul Levitz will be interesting, though I think it's overkill to use Adventure Comics as an ancillary LoSH book when so many franchises are begging for attention/revamps (i.e. the Shazam family, Aquaman, etc.).

Levitz is typically regarded as the Legion writer, so I'm sure you will enjoy it. If you aren't familiar with his writing, I would try out The Great Darkness Saga...outside of Johns Legion Trilogy, it's the only epic that the franchise has ever had.

Started rereading my collection a few months ago, starting with the first 9 archives. I have from Superboy #172 onwards and last night finished the Great Darkness Saga and the anniversary #300 issue.

Lovin' every minute of it. :)

With regard to the minorities thing, there's a fan-made version of Legion of Super-Heroes vol. 5 #1-3 in which most of the characters' races are changed. I'm not going to provide a link to it because it probably violates CBR's copyright rules, but to find it, you can Google for "everyone survives to the 31st century".

As for the original question, the Legion is far and away my favorite comic book. I've used it for some much-needed escapism during some tough times in my life. My favorite Legionnaires include Phantom Girl, Shadow Lass, XS, Brainiac 5, Light Lass, and Invisible Kid. My favorite Legion writers are Shooter, Levitz and Waid, not necessarily in that order. My favorite Legion artists are Swan, Sherman, Sprouse, Moy, Kitson and Manapul.

I voted the original, though I consider original, post-crisis (before they fixed what wasn't broken with Zero Hour) and the Johns version to be essentially the same thing. They're all the same characters I loved growing up.

Talisman, as I've ranted elsewhere, find the Five Year Later series if you can. You will be astonished how good it was.

Thinking about picking up some Archive Editions of the Legion, any suggestions on where I should start?

The 'threeboot' era is probably my favorite, though that might be because it follows the horrific and disgusting Giffen era. Of course, they ruined it again with Legion World (splitting the group, driving Element Lad insane, and other stupid moves). So the real answer is some kind of amalgam of the original and the Threeboot, or the Threeboot before Legion World.

You're thinking of the Reboot (Or Post-Zero Hour as it's called in this poll). The Threeboot came after that when Waid and Kitson restarted it all again.

(But I agree with you that it was better than the Giffen 5YG stuff and the Post Legion World stuff (DnA).).

I got the entire run on Friday, and in the past 3 days, I've read 36 issues. I just can't put it down, that's how much I enjoy the 3boot version.

I'm a huge fan of the first 38 issues of the 5 Years Later Legion, essentially the issues co-written by Keith Giffen. This is not only my favourite version of the Legion but also some of my favourite comics in general.

Not sure how to vote though. I guess that period falls into post-Crisis Legion.

Depends on what you're looking for...If you want to see the stories from the beginning, Volume 1....Some of the classics, then Volumes 5 to 8 are great.

Depends, I was most interested in the Cockrum era, so I started with Archive #7 or 8 I believe. It's expensive though, I found my gently used so it wasn't that bad.

I'm not sure about your definition of "epic", but I could list quite a few Legion stories that are a) long, b) noteworthy, and c) had a wide scope. Two obvious ones are Earthwar and Legion Lost.

I voted for "I like them all". In fact, I like some versions of the Legion that weren't even included in the poll.

I forgot Legion Lost! I am not familiar with Earthwar.

I got into the Legion on the tail end of the Reboot, and I still haven't collected the majority of it.
