    Zombieland

Finally got to watch it after hearing some good stuff, and wasn't disappointed. Good humour full of pop culture references that aren't forced in the slightest. It all makes sense. Like Little Rock schooling Tallahassee on Hannah Montana, etc. I was expecting it to be more action, with comedy mixed in, but it seems to be a comedy first, as most of the action and violence is played for the highest comedic value also.

    The Box

I liked Donnie Darko, and even enjoyed Southland Tales, so it's no surprise I enjoyed this. It's hard to talk about though, without giving too much away, because the conceit of the button and the random death plus a million dollars is only a very small part of the puzzle.

Since it is based on a short story, it's also heavy on morality and irony. The only thing it's not heavy on is details. You have to fill in a lot yourself about what's going on.

Watched that, excellent, at one time they were Germanys most vicious terrorist org, and apparently, there is a 2nd and 3rd generation of RAF more notorious then the previous.
I can't help thinking that the right-wing government of West Germany at the time caused a lot of the problems that started the Red Factions' campaign of violence.

    Pump of the Volume

Heavy handed, to be sure, but still a really cool movie. I never understood why Christian Slater was never more of a star and this film drives that point home even further.

    Formosa Betrayed

Not a particularly sophisticated movie. Lots of rough edges. Interesting and educational though.

    From Paris With Love

I enjoyed it. It was better than I was expecting. Went in thinking it would be a fairly one-dimensional, slightly obnoxious macho-fest but it was wasn't. Lots of action and bravado but Travolta's character did have substance and was very entertaining as well. The climactic scene was poignant.

    Avatar IMAX 3D

I saw this last week. It was a waste of money. The special effects weren't that impressive and the plot was retarded. The planet being an immense biologically-connected data network would have been of far more interest to anyone with a lick of business knowledge than any Mcguffin commodity. I did like the tribute to Heinlein's Starship Troopers with the marines using powered armour though. Cameron's a lot better working with smaller budgets where the effects aren't so expensive he has to dumb down the story to make it a favourite of the masses.

Fabulous movie. I also enjoyed Heathers and True Romance, as well as Gleaming the Cube (when I was young and it was cool). I'll admit, I'm a Christian Slater fan.

    Currently watching Weeds: Season 4.
Not a bad show, but I often wonder why Mary Louise Parker's character has sex at random times.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians- Fun family movie. I never read the books, so I can't complain about how unfaithful they may be.

It was good, wasn't it. It's too bad the animation studio that made it folded up shop not long ago. They were one of the few studios around willing to revive old animated shows as animated movies rather than live action projects. Also, they didn't seem to be reviving old shows for the "irony points".

    Black Dynamite

Best comedy in years. Not since Shaun of the Dead has a movie like this actually managed to live up to the wave of hype behind it. In a better world, this would be a hit and make Michael Jai White a household name.

    Escape from L.A.

There's definately a drop off in terms of quality from this, and "New York". However, I would say it's atleast watchable. If only to see Kurt Russell as Snake one last time.

    Un Flic

Un Flic is Jean-Pierre Melville's last film, starring Alain Delon and Richard Crenna.

This film is interesting in that Delon plays an unlikable inspector (as opposed to his usual cool criminal), with Crenna being the cool criminal this time around.

The two heist scenes in Un Flic are as deliciously deliberate as what you would expect from Melville, but one of the scenes loses a little power due to insufficient technical effects (the train and helicopter are obviously fake).

The film's storytelling is a little awkward at first (especially when Delon's character is introduced via voice-over narrative), but once everything is set up, the story is decent.

    Great ending.

(I recommend seeing the other two Melville/Delon pictures first: Le Samourai and Le Cercle Rouge.)

    Idiocracy

Fantastic premise. It's like Wall-E meets Beavis & Butthead, but live-action. The opening scene arguing for the fall of mankind into rampant stupidity was by far the high point of the film, with the 'smart' people who don't have kids vs the 'dumb' people who don't know when to stop - hilarious! From there, though, I thought it just went into regular silly comedy territory. Sadly, this future could be a lot closer to us than 500 years away. ;)

    Jennifer's Body

The entire premise is just ridiculous, but I think it's meant to be? If you take it as the stab at hipster culture, and in particular indie bands, that it's trying to be, this is a pretty enjoyable film. It's full of quotable, snippy lingo. And wow, this is two movies in a row (the other being How to Lose Friends and Alienate People) with Megan Fox where she successfully plays a character that you just gotta hate. It's got to be a gift.
