In 2008, it was thought that The Dark Knight might sink the Titanic. Another 70 million domestically, and it would have.

Now, if anyone can sink the Titanic and the Dark Knight, it would HAVE to be Cameron himself!

Topping Titanic is a done deal, it is only 2 million away and will surpass it today, and with no end to it's sales in sight it looks like it will top it when adjusted for ticket prices as well.

Another milestone achieved by Avatar in an impressive fashion (and quick to), I'm happy. Although the figure is wrong in the opening post (though right in the article) - Avatar is at $552,797,000 Dom (which puts it ahead of TDK both adjusted and unadjusted).

Still a great run for TDK at number two and now three, and it in no way diminishes what a great film it is. And for the time being it will still be one of only three films to make $500 mil + domestically in its initial run.

Cameron, slayer of Box Office Monsters (Monster Earners that is) including those he created himself.

Indeed, WW Titanic should be number two right about now, though it wont be confirmed till the earnings are updated. Truly exciting stuff.

Now it is just a question of surpassing it Domestically (probably only two weeks off doing that at most). And of course what it's final figures will be.

Default Avatar really is that good

I just saw Avatar with some friends for the second time this weekend and the movie is just that good. Yes the special effects are amazing, but the real story really is the story that goes with them. Avatar is food for the mind as well as candy for the eye. A very nice change from most of the movie fare lately.

    Just in advance

Everyone who makes a "Dances with Wolves" comment is a douche-bag!

what about James Cameron? the guy who made "Avatar" was the very FIRST person to make such comparisons.

Or they're just telling the truth, something your avatar, Spider Jerusalem, would appreciate.

Really ? I thought the movie was overhyped and the plot was craptastic.

The quality-doesn't-equal-dollar-signs viewpoint is important to keep in mind.

The you-get-what-you-pay-for viewpoint can be an easy enough counterpoint. Sometimes dollar DOES equal quality.

Not everything that makes money HAS to be the McDonald's argument by default.

That's not what I said at all.

In fact, the implication of my argument--that there is no consistent relationship--backs up your statement.

    Oh yes, my bad!
I guess I'm just too used to people relying solely on the "It made money and is popular, therefore it sucks" argument.

    My apologies, kind sir!
