Surge
Real Name: Noriko “Nori” Ashida
Status: Active. Residing on Utopia with the X-Men
Powers & Abilities: Surge absorbs static electricity in the air (or from any electrical source) and stores it in her body. She can then direct it outward as electric bursts, or convert it into superspeed. This also increases the speed of her metabolism, allowing her to heal slightly faster than normal (although this is not a healing factor). Her powers are uncontrollable, so she uses gauntlets that Beast designed to control her absorption.
Bio: Noriko Ashida is from Tokyo, Japan. She ran away from home at a young age after her powers developed because she couldn’t stand living with her family anymore. Her father, Seiji Ashida, claimed that he “didn’t believe in mutants”. So she left for America. She was homeless and living in Salem center, but unable to control her powers. She needed to use illegal narcotics to slow down her metabolism so she would not absorb so much electricity. During this time she injured and stole money from Luna DePaula (the owner of The Grindstone) to pay for her drugs. She tried moving to the Xavier Institute, but Julian Keller shunned her and sent her away, because she was dirty and homeless (he didn’t know she was a mutant). It wasn’t until David and the other New Mutants found her that she came to the Institute.
Despite being very aloof and distant from the other students, Nori did become friends with David Alleyne and Jay Guthrie. She gained a reputation for being a “rebel without a cause” due to her snarky attitude, and her habit of unabashedly talking back to teachers. Surge did not, at all, get along with her roommate, Sooraya Qadir, because she felt that Sooraya didn’t respect herself or women’s rights.
When David’s little sister Kim came to visit the Institute, the New Mutants squad realized a ghost was haunting the Mansion. Surge went to great lengths to try and impress Kim, and help the ghost. This was because she really missed her younger brother, Keitaro. When the group managed to calm the ghost down, Surge became a foster older sister of sorts to him.
After David saw a possible future where he became a villain, he started to avoid and ignore Nori, because in this future the two of them were married. Surge did not understand why he was being so distant with her. Their fight culminated at a campfire that Sofia organized for everyone, where they finally made up, and then made out.
When the Scarlet Witch created the House of M world, Surge was at first a student at the New Mutants academy for future leaders, but she decided to become a SHIELD operative because of her offensive powers. She joined the Hellions, a teen mutant squad led by Dani Moonstar and Julian Keller. She was still dating Prodigy in this reality. However Surge was temporarily removed from the squad when they had to stop a human terrorist, her father! Surge went to David for help, so the two of them, along with some others, went to Tokyo to stop the Hellions from harming her father, and to stop the terrorists from harming any innocent mutants or humans. In the end, the Hellions and the New Mutants joined forces with the terrorists to save the innocent humans being experimented on. They all died trying to stop the evil Emperor Sunfire.

When M-Day and Decimation hit, Surge was one of the lucky few who retained their powers. She joined the other squads in a brawl in the Danger Room, and everyone battled for a spot on the main team of new X-Men. Not only did Surge make the cut, but she became the new leader of the team, much to her (and Julian’s) surprise and dismay. Surge had difficulties leading her team because Julian kept undermining her authority, and because all their friends kept dying all around them. After a terrible assault from the Purifiers, Surge led the whole team to Texas to defeat the sentinel Nimrod and save Forge.
Cyclops decided that Surge did a good job in protecting Forge and her team, so he allowed her and Prodigy to select new members of the squad. But before they could successfully recruit anyone, Mercury was kidnapped by the Facility. Hellion and X-23 went after her, but Surge, the rest of the team, and the X-Men needed to save them. While Surge was lecturing Hellion for taking off without telling her or anyone, Belasco sucked the school into Limbo, leaving Surge and Hellion on Earth. While the students fought to stay alive and escape, Surge and Hellion devised a way to get in. They did so, and then they took Belasco down.
Once again, Cyclops applauded Surge’s effort and efficiency. She saved her team, and got everyone out with no casualties. He did notice that she had anger management issues though, and suggested that she try to keep her emotions under better control. However Nori couldn’t. All she could think of was that Prodigy nearly died in Limbo, and she knew she needed to protect him. She decided that David was safer away from all the mutant chaos, so she made out with Hellion in front of David to anger him enough to leave the school. Unfortunately this plan backfired, and not only did David stay at the school, he got himself his skills and knowledge back, and promptly broke up with Nori.
You won’t like her when she’s angry
During Messiah CompleX, Surge led the students on an assault against the Purifiers headquarters in Washington DC, to avenge all their fallen friends. Surge was frying religious zealots with such ferocity that even Hellion told her to amp down. Unfortunately, the assault ended when Lady Deathstrike stabbed Hellion through the chest. Nori redeemed herself though when she singlehandedly saved Indra, Wolf Cub, and Trance from Predator X when it attacked the Mansion. She and Prodigy then led the team’s attack against it to save Hellion and Elixir in the infirmary. She was then teleported with the team to Muir Island where she fought the Marauders. After the battle ended, the X-Men disbanded, and the school shut down.
With no home, and no place to go, Surge ran all the way to Colorado to visit Dani Moonstar. The two of them exchanged their views on life, but despite Dani’s best efforts to instill some hope into Surge, Nori still felt disheartened with the way the world was.
After the X-Men reformed in San Francisco, Surge joined them. She was a member of various strike teams when the X-Men used guerilla warfare to fight off the Skrulls. Unfortunately she and Hellion were kidnapped by the Sapien League and injected with a mutated strand of the Legacy Virus. They were going to let them explode inside the United Nations building in NYC, but she and Hellion managed to escape. At the last second, just as she was going to self destruct, Hellion directed her electrical blast up towards the sky, and Elixir healed her. She made it!
During the mutant riots in San Francisco, Surge patrolled the perimeters trying to keep people safe. She focused her attention on the most violent rioters and assisted the police with various arrests. She now lives on Utopia with the X-Men.
When Surge was kidnapped
Did You Know: Surge had her codename before she joined the X-Men? The homeless people living in Salem Center called her “Surge” long before she arrived at the Institute.
