    Default Rick Olney--Fibber or Mega-Giganta-Fibber? Part 2

Due to server constraints the old thread had to be archived. But look a shiny new thread!

If anyone would like to take a moment to write up a recap of events, I'm sure it would be much appreciated.

The old thread can be viewed here:
    http://forums.comicbookresources.com...d.php?t=156451

Post 'em if you got 'em.

    Indeed.

So if the new limit is 5000, does that mean this would actually be part 11 if the thread was completely broken down?

    Sho 'nuff.

If someone has an idea of where a recap has already been posted in thread it can be quoted into the new thread by cutting and pasting. I just don't currently have the hours it would take to go through the thread and find one.

Once upon a time, there was a man in Mohawk, New York named Rick Olney.

He started a small-scale comics club called the West Utica Comics Club and then the later Organised Readers of Comics Associated (ORCA), both in the 90s. ORCA was a non-profit charity that gave away hundreds of thousands of free comics to people! Later, he moved into self-publishing and convention running. He had two conventions: a comics con named Mighty Mini-Con and a horror con called The Spooky. His comic ventures, culminating in the company Tightlip Entertainment, was on the rise! He even created Comics in the Classroom, a project CrossGen themselves borrrowed!

Unfortunately, dear readers, a lot of the above... is a lie.

You see, ORCA was not a non-profit. On the old Comicon boards, it turned out he'd been fibbing about that - a charge he violently denied. The numbers of free comics were hideously inflated, far beyond what the organisation could really have done - and the numbers leapt up every year he retold the tale!

The Spooky and Mighty Mini-Con, dear readers, were often cancelled... and at the last minute, with no way for the poor retailers and the invited con guests to change their plans or get money back. In fact, The Spooky was never held! The Mighty Mini-Con was held at least twice, but attendance was extremely low... and the travel costs, meals and so forth that Olney promised the guests he'd provide? Why, they did not appear!

Comics in the Classroom, you ask? Why, that was not his idea at all! It long predated him and CrossGen was unaware he existed... but that didn't stop him falsely claiming a copyright on it, and having a real Comics in the Classroom website slap "his" copyright notice on it!

With Tightlip, he conned many a small press creator into believing he had big plans and big money... and so they worked, creating strips for him, while over and over he dodged paying them. Some of these poor creators were desperate - bills to pay, sick families, hungry children... but found only excuses from him. Occassionally, he even had a go at them for making such demands!

How did he get away with this for so long, you wonder? Well, many of the people he'd scammed just wrote him off. Others were scared, dear reader... scared of his mighty lawyers! For he lied about having lawyers, and that they would unleash a great lawsuit upon anyone who went public or took their work away! Others, still desperate, were strung along with promises of payment...

But then Olney tried this on comic creator Chuck Dixon. And Chuck Dixon did not like it. And Chuck Dixon made it clear and public that he had not been paid, and did not buckle to Olney's threat.

And that caused Olney's whole mountain of lies to come crashing down!

(I could do a more comprehensive and serious recap, but I think attempting it would break my mind.)

I think what you did last time was a feat on its own. If anyone deserved to be called the MVP of the previous thread, it was you.

I think this recap is most excellent! Bravo, sir. It sticks to the basics and has the benefit of being TRUE.

The only thing I would add is that the monumental thread is pretty much dealing with Olney's monumental attempts to cover up his sleezebag nature.

    My blog.

And just think, that's not even covering that he owes approx $35,500 to thirty people and has four default judgements against him, two with collection agencies - and that's just the ones we know of.

Or covering the charity fraud, stealing comics and attempting to steal comics, scamming a bus company, exaggerating his US Marine service and then trying to browbeat other Marine veterans into putting up with his actions by going "REMEMBER IN THE MARINES?!"...
