Finished Metal Gear Solid 4 for the upteenth time, and each time I do, it reminds me just how far the rest of the medium has to go to get caught up.

By medium, do you mean games should have much less gameplay and more over written story that would be laughed out of movie theatres?

BTW, MGS fan, MGS 4 fan, but come on.

Took a brief break from Paper Mario: Sticker Star to play the new (free!) retro-themed DLC in New Super Mario Bros 2.

Got the new Prof Layton and Scribblenauts Unlimited at the same time as Paper Mario but haven’t touched either yet.
New and improved me. Now with a CAPITAL “B”.

The whole thing is an elaborate commentary on the industry's creative sterility, the excesses of the military-industrial complex, the reluctance that older generations have for passing the torch, and the dangers of hero worship. Metal Gear Solid went from a story about how war is bad, to a story about how control of media is bad, to a story about the preciousness of individual and the way it's lost through selfish interpretations.

The main dramatic story about Snake's aging is a powerful dramatic hook in and of itself. The rest you need to know what to look for to get it, but I think the meaning of the cutscenes does a lot to inform and improve the action.

So Raiden running around naked with his hand over his junk and doing cartwheels has some type of deep meaning?

never cartwheel naked? It's not particularly deep, but a necessary lesson all should learn at some point.

Not many games fit in a public service message. I applaud it.

Not every single second, but the humor beats do help a lot when it comes to pacing, so that the dramatic moments are more poignant.

At the moment I'm juggling Dead Island, Oblivion. Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning, DC Universe Online, and GTA IV (Free Mode). These are the games I pick up maybe for two hours a week, as my interest comes and goes.

The only games I play daily are on handhelds, while commuting--Might and Magic 2 (old school) and the Capcom arcade version of Alien vs Predator, both on my PSP, and a few rounds of Phantasy Star Zero as I lay in bed watching Seinfeld before sleep (hunting a few VERY rare weapons).
