Ive been a long time "lurker" as you would call it, of this forum, i thought i would finally join! as you can see by my forum name you know who my favorite x-man is.
As i said i have been lurking and i know people on here don't think too highly of him, you would think he was hitler with as much hate as he gets.
Why do so many comic readers hate gambit?

Some would say it's because he's a traitor and mass murderer (still haven't worked out how he's the second of those, but there you go), I put it down to a built in American snobbery towards men from the southern states ( they think he's a hick), there is also the fact that he hasn't been written welll since the late 90's and the current version is a shadow of his former self. I did a similar thread once a while back and you're right that the level of vitriol aimed at Gambit is disproportionate to the crimes the character has comitted but if the writers can't stand him (even in the comics you have Wolverine lecturing Gambit like he's some born again mother theresa) then the readers are unlikely to take to him. (it would help if any of the writers had a clue how to write him, but they don't and he's become nothing more than a fop who chases after rogue like a puppy dog).

Some people labour under the impression that some comic book characters are cooler than others, when really all comic book characters are equally lame-o.

I don't believe you, if you really had "lurked" here as you claim there is no way you would have thought it was acceptable to have "Gambit" in your screen name.

I don't think there's a single thread on the first page that even mentions Gambit aside from stupid stuff like "mutant tracker". No Gambit hate here.

I, for one, have always liked Gambit. My only problems have been in recent time when Milligan randomly made him a horseman of Apocalypse for no credible reason then was further assassinated by becoming a Marauder. That was one pooch screw after another right there.

I like Gambit. He's an acrobatic character, those just aren't "trendy" anymore.

Gambit is my favorite X-Man too! Maybe the people who hate him never read his ongoing by Fabian Nicieza and Steve Skroce...I can't imagine anyone reading that not liking Gambit!!!

I believe the reason many people hate Gambit is because sometimes the character goes a little over the board with his accent, cheesy (but touching!) lines, talking in third person, womanizing, dressing... well a little too much 'check me out i'm so damn cool', and cliche (Gambit show ya de card trick, homme, non? Well, whatever that blogger said, it's kinda funny). It's just the character being mishandled. I'm hoping for an X-writer that would keep the coolness at the appropriate level. Carey seems to be doing that, but even his Gambit is lil bit of a wallpaper character, he lacks the 90s charm.

For me the Rogue-Gambit-relationship killed them both on some level,neither she nor him seemed that much of independent characters anymore. He really came to annoy me then. + I think he should be off the teams and mainly work solo for his character to work, he needs that mystery-independent style Oo
