Wasn't a fan of Rami's movies, especially the third with dancing emo Spidey, (missed out on an action figure there, surely?) Hoping I'll like this one more, but all the clips I've seen aren't filling me with optimism. Shame Marvel haven't got the movie rights.

I'm in Dubai right now and I gotta say, it's a Spider-man country.

There are literally billboards of The Amazing Spider-man everywhere and the hype here is palpable.

It seems the skepticism surrounding the movie is limited to the US (and probably the UK).

Wow. Thats probably the first time ever those guys have ever given a superhero movie a good rating. Strange days indeed.

So here's my spoiler free review of the Spider-Man reboot.

Apart from some incredibly poor CGI the film LOOKED gorgeous, but man was the writing bad. The film tried far too hard to be dark and really just lost all of the fun Spider-Man should have. Due to the darkness any serious moments are killed due to it going from dark and moody to...dark and moody.

Another problem was that the romance seemed incredibly forced and cliche. The action scenes were severely lacking in any actual action, it reminded me of how in the 90s cartoon Spider-Man wasn't allowed to pull a punch, and the film did in fact have that annoying first person perspective from the trailers. While the acting ranged from okay (Sally Field as Aunt May) to great (Rhys Ifans as Doctor Connors and Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben), I saw a lack of most of the characters I know so well. Peter Parker is an asshole, Gwen is Emma Stone playing Emma Stone (I can't stand Emma Stone either so that was a REAL pain), and Doctor Connors/Lizard...has SERIOUS problems (can't get into without spoilers).

As for the plot everything just seemed so damned convenient. Things just seemed to happen and everything just happened to be connected, which of course leads to the film becoming incredibly cliche, boring, and forced. There are more problems with the film that I can't get into due to spoilers, but they messed up really bad on key themes of the Spider-Man mythology and Spider-Man as a character.

Unless you are going to literally die if you don't see this, wait for video because this was neither amazing, nor Spider-Man. 4/10

PS: Stan Lee's cameo, while not the best, is hilarious.

I'll get into more details once it get farther past it's release.

The headline for this review caught my attention on rotten tomatoes. If Peter really doesn't put the blame of uncle Ben's death on himself then that is definitely a big detail to alter in the origin story. He also says Peter carries little responsibility for Aunt May in this movie.

Also I noticed this is a catholic news site so I guess thats why they heavily scrutinized this.

The reviewer much like the IGN poor review seems to be a fan of spider-man outside of the movies.

the 77% rottentomatoes score just seems low for a spidey movie, considering all the material there is to work with.

He doesn't blame himself, in fact Peter more then likely couldn't have done anything to stop Ben's death. He also doesn't have any responsibility for Aunt May.

He actually DOES put the blame of Uncle Ben's death on himself. Hence his whole reason to mask up and be a vigilante. The movie practically hits you over the head with it.

Indeed he does carry little responsibility for Aunt May in this picture because, similar to ultimate Spidey, she isn't elderly. She can handle herself, she doesn't need to be doted on, if that'S what the reviewer is suggesting.

Honestly I feel like it was less him blaming himself then him just wanting to kill the guy who hurt him.

The kid is devastated. Not only did he not stop the robber, no, he actually profited (somewhat) from the crime. I can see why you see it that way, but I found it quite logical, actually: He doesn't sit around moping but lashes out. He takes matters into his own hands, as a vigilante would do. Hadn't he blamed himself, I doubt he would have acted that way. Remember, he only comes around to his "With great power..." self after he sees the good he can do: the kid on the bridge and what happens if he doesn't use his powers effectively: Capaint Stacys death.

Sure, he doesn't immediately after Uncle Ben's death snap into his usual Spider-Man persona, but that's his character arc (at least in this movie). In the end he realizes that with great power must always come great responsibility.

It still doesn't change the fact that the whole reason Spider-Man exists in this film revenge. He becomes the vigilante out of selfish reasons. As for the rest we'll have to see if he's truly learned his lesson if there is a sequel.

Erm, he did that in the Raimi films, too, only there he actually found the guy. Also, I seem to remember, in the comics he actually beat the poor sob half to death before recoiling in horror. All in all, i'd rather see him lashing out, instead of moping around like he did for large parts of the third Raimi film.

Also, did you see him move? that was actually quite excellent, not to mention him actually keeping his mask ON through large parts of the movie.

Just got home from it. it kicked ass. They took liberties with the story but this time I didn't mind because it was good.. and having a giant lizard as a villain is a very awesome step away from trying to make things more realistic. This movie had the comic book feel and all the fantastical impossibilities of spider-man's universe, but at the same time the characters were real and believable and Spider-Man was Spider-Man.

I watched the movie last Saturday in IMAX 3D and it was nice! I think even if I watched it in 2D I will still have the same verdict. I'll not comment on the story line because I haven't started reading The Amazing Spider-Man comics. But for me, Andrew Garfield played the role nicely. His brilliance in Social Network can also be seen in this. And Andrew Garfield + Emma Stone is really cute. They have the chemistry and you know it's a good one if you can't explain why they look cute together.
