Marc Webb/Andrew Garfield's 2012 Spider-Man movie megathread

Raimi only seemed like an odd choice at first if you knew nothing about his body of work. Man couldn't get people to give him the rights to established superheroes, so he made his own. And the Evil Dead effect was tailor-made for Spider-Man.


Seriously though, Darkman, Hercules, Xena, the MANTIS pilot, to a lesser extent Army of Darkness... which one of these films/TV shows say "outside the box" when it comes to superhero stuff? If anything, Raimi was almost too "on-the-nose."

Have not seen that movie of that director or even heard of him before.
But hopefully with Marvel creative control of the story and a fresh new set of actors and new special effects this will be a cool start for another trilogy of Spider-Man movies.

I wasn't aware Marvel had any creative control of the Spider-Man movies. I thought Sony had it all.

I was a little worried myself figuring that (500) Days of Summer was some teen romantic comedy, which it was, but not having seen it I was unaware how good it apparently is (8.1 on IMDB). Makes me wonder if this could lead to Joseph Gordon-Levitt taking on the role of Pete/Spidey. He is a very good young actor who was excellent in The Lookout and Brick which I saw, please ignore him as Cobra Commander as that whole movie was just terrible.

The first two Spider-Man movies worked because Sam Rami had so much passion for the source material. This guy might make a good movie, but I'm not sure it would be a good spider-man movie.

Of course he could be the biggest Spider-man fan in the world, who knows.

Great movies have been made by people with no significant interest in the source material.

I really don't know how I feel about this.

On the one hand, I saw (500 Days Of) Summer with my wife and was surprisingly entertained.....thought it would just be a "chick flick" but the direction was bold and different, certainly the highlight of the film.

On the other hand, it seems Marvel made a (too) fast move here and I would have thought more serious consideratiion would have been given to someone with some kind of comics cred, despite success tales to the contrary.

Could be they had this guy in their back pocket all along......

Great movies have been made by people with no significant interest in the source material.

Good point. This is especially true of many science fiction franchise films-some of the most sucessful Star Treks were those done by Nicholas Meyer (II, VI) and J.J Abrams (The new one), both directors who didn't really care for the original material but still managed fantastic movies.


I think the same could be said of the Star Wars franchise, as Empire Strikes Back, the most critically sucessful and a favorite of many fans, was the one Lucas had the least involvement in.

Well they're production partners. They don't have the level of control that they do over say Iron Man, but they likely have at least some commenting ability.



That said, I'm neutral on this. It seems fast, but I'm sure this thing was brewing in the background for some time (the fact that Webb's name was mentioned the hour after Raimi left says a lot).

It's the vogue now for unknown/little known/independant directors to be given the big chair...really kicked off in part by Raimi on Spider-man (and Singer on X-Men and Jackson on LOTR). Studios like the big $$$...but studio heads like the critical acclaim too.

Gotta admit, it's an interesting choice. Especially since this will only be the director's SECONE feature film. Still, Raimi seemed an odd choice at first and look how that turned out.

Unfortunately the same can be said for Tim Story.. look how that played out for the FF :(

I've not seen the movie(500 days), I will. hope it works out. Although I adore Raimi I can understand starting all fresh from the ground up.
