Wonder Woman Sales Figures - Now to 1942

So, in preparation for the "Wonder Woman book that should have been (but now isn't)," I had started gathering sales data about Wonder Woman's sales and circulation.

This involved getting data from the Statements of Ownership (SOO) that ran in the comics, which, as you'll see from the info below, was hampered some by the fact that actual NUMBERS were not reported in them until 1959, and some years the SOO were not published as they were supposed to be.

In more recent "Direct Sales" years, sales figures can be culled from Distributor lists at these three sites. After January 2003, all diamond reports were of the final sales that month; removing from the list orders for comics that did not actually ship. Prior to February 2003, all figures were preorders, meaning that actual final orders were probably higher.

I'll present the following in several posts, and describe each. If anyone is good with graphs and graphics, it would be cool to have these put in graph form. Maybe someone would want to contact me off-list about this?

Here is a list of cover prices for all regular issues of Wonder Woman, Sensation Comics, and Comic Cavalcade.
One can see the sharp price inflation on this list.

Frightening to think that up until their first price increase the original run of 232 issues combined of Wonder Woman and Sensation and 29 issues of Comic Cavalcade would have cost a grand total of $27.55.

That same amount would not buy you 9 comics today... not 261. Ouch!

However, there appears to we an unmistakable downward trend which is likely attributable to aging Wonder Woman fans, while no bottom has been placed, in terms of attracting new fans; in other words, have to figure out a way to begin attracting a new audience; I believe such can be done by introducing some topics which some fans would find controversial, but the newly arrived fans would love, and I believe those fans steady left after Loebs' run, with no real effort to re-attract them; they were simply dismissed; I know that's a controversial statement, but that can produce sales to create a bottom and bring Wonder Woman back on the rise. A group does not like cheesecake, as some call it, but another group would love the cheesecake, and that group was allowed to leave with Loebs. Also, the internet is having a similar impact to comics as it's having on the music industry.

I really think sales need to be taken with a grain of salt and it's certainly a pointless and repetitive arguement to get into over whether comic sales overall have fallen.

Remember that many people download their comics these days. Yes, it's illegal and annoying but there it is, there might be another 40,000 people downloading Wonder Woman comics.

People also borrow and trade comics between friends so one copy doesn't mean one person. It might mean 2, 3 or even 10 people. I borrow a lot of comics off my ex, sometimes I'll buy my own and sometimes I'll just keep his and hope he forgets about them.

Wonder Woman is still selling 30-60 thou and I think we should try to be more positive instead of complaining all the time about some weird arbitrary marker of success.

This is why I think that a graph would better help show the figures. It hasn't really "held" a 40k figure since the earliest days of Byrne's run, although it rose to that amount in Rucka's run.

OTOH, it has significantly declined every year since 1979, which is when the TV show left the air. It has now settled in to the mid-20s-mid-30s range, and pretty much stays there, excepting sales ploys.

Interestingly enough, Birds of Prey often beat Wonder Woman, and yet, it's cancelled. These days, Buffy, Batgirl, Spider-Woman, and Supergirl all outsell WW. In Buffy's case, it's almost double, while the others are only a few thousand above.

But comic sales today are a pittance of what they were pre-1980. Not that that's really news.

There are problems collecting most of the missing data.

1984-1988 are years I haven't snagged the SOOs for YET; after that, DC stopped filing them. I'll be getting them, just have not.

1984-2006 is also when the rise of the Direct Market had a major effect. There were two MAJOR direct distributors (Diamond and Capital), numerous smaller ones (Heroes World, Second Genesis, and others), AND there was still a newsstand market. So collating sales figures WITHOUT any SOOs is going to be next to impossible. I have sales charts for several of the distributors, so I can show ranking, but that's a long and laborious process and involves getting a lot of boxes out of storage.

The interesting thing with the SOOs is that the correlation between print run and actual sales was ABSURD. DC was often printing up to three times the amount of actual copies sold. If WW was selling 50,000 copies (including subscriptions), DC might print and ship to newsstands 150,000, of which 100,000 copies would be destroyed!

Once the Direct Market nearly completely took the place of the newsstand market, sales narrowed down more than they ever had, cutting off all but the "fans" who would go to comic book stores; casual buyers who would pick up the title on newsstands thus disappeared, as did their sales.

Then too, one must look at the cultural world around comics, and how outer entertainment factors have affected comics as a whole.
* The rise of television in the 1950s-1960s dealt a major blow to the comics field, probably much moreso than anything Wertham and Kefauver ever did.
* The rise of video games -- and video tapes -- in the 1980s struck the second major blow.
* The rise of the internet in the 1990s struck almost a killing blow.
* These latter two, combined with the rise of the Direct Market supremacy and the strangling to death of newsstand sales, meant that by the 1990s, comics were selling only a fraction of what they once had.
* Add in today's high prices vs. the recession, and it's lucky comic fans have any market to visit.

As to your assertion about the Loebs run, that period will be one of the hardest to graph, as it is post-SOO and smack in the middle of the multiple-distributors newsstand-dying era. But I actually believe, from the evidence I've read, that Byrne's run (which as one can see, was well into the 40K range) was the highest the book had been since the early days of Perez's run. I think the Loebs run started small in sales, and experienced a spike during the Deodato era, but not equal (or possibly barely equal) to Byrne's sales.

So, it's really post-Byrne that the sales -- and fans -- were lost.

Yeah, Buffy is really the only female-led book that breaks out of the little ghetto that Batgirl/Power Girl/Wonder Woman/Ms. Marvel/Supergirl inhabit in the 70-80 area on the Top 100. But Buffy is sort of its own thing, with a large built-in fanbase before the comic even premiered.
