Default "Happy Birthday Retard" - Fantastic Four #574

Just reading FF #574 which opens with a surprise party for Franklin. Valeria says to her brother, "Happy Birthday retard."

    And everyone's cool with it.

Seriously? Look I think in the right context you can say whatever you want but what's next, "Welcome to the X-Men fag. Hope you survive the experience?"

The Fantastic Four isn't Kick Ass.

    What the hell?

It's the kind of thing I think a kid like her might say, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a good idea to make it part of the dialogue.
"His name is Kettch, and he's an Ewok."
    "No."
"Oh yes. Determined to fight. You should hear him say 'Yub, yub.' He makes it a battle cry."

I'm positive I called my lil bratty brother far worse. Especially when I was burying him in the backyard!

The Fantastic Four have been presenting Reed's daughter Val as being almost as smart as Reed himself. And she's got a vague age range of around 2-4.

You can see it in the preview here.

I just find it crass for someone as smart as Val to lower herself to the lowest common denominator to insult her brother. She can do so much better.
The monster saved them all. And in their fear, they betrayed him. As they always have. As they always will.

You haven't read the script for Orson Scott Card's run on Uncanny yet, I'm assuming.

I think its just something kids would say and diss each other . And being family.... yes I have seen it. Hell , I remember when the South Park creators were doing an interview and they were asked about the over the top swearing the kids did and how wrong it seemed for them.

Parker answered nearly : "Well , coming from a normal childhood we all swore and cussed bad. So its not far fetched for this."

This is something a sister or brother would say pretty much in real life. So yeah its something many have experinced in life im sure. I have no problem with it. Playing up the family and having a sister razz her brother is kinda cute in a way.

As someone else mentioned this is the smartest women in the Marvel universe currently. I get that she's a little girl but someone calling someone that a couple hundred I.Q. points below them retarded sits badly.

Also yes, a kid might say it but then the parents should say something. The book seems to endorse this as being fun and cute. Again, even though Johnny and Ben insult each other all the time could you ever see them calling each other fag or an anti semitic slur?

South Park is a long way from one of Marvel's flagship books, especially one with a kid and Spider-Man having a laugh on the cover.

That fits Franklin quite well considering the editorial mandate.

How old is Franklin supposed to be now? He should be 20 years old by this point but he always seems to be stuck at 8. I blame his god-like powers!

I'm 35, my brother's 39, and we still call each other things like that.

LOL and I'm already disabled so seeing it in that context shouldn't phase anyone.
