Well it's too bad they're only releasing a hardcover - why not a straight-up reprint?
Did DC ever reprint the Superman vs. Captain Marvel treasury-sized comic that came out around the same time as Supes vs. Ali?
if it's going hard cover, i'd love it bound with other 2 super vs (not counting spidey) Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman. I got both of those last year and they were fun reads.
The Gurnee Comic and toy show returns Sept 9th at the Gurnee Holiday Inn. Bigger room, more stuff!
Probably one of the few DC tabloids I have no interest in seeing reprinted.
But I'd gladly buy hard or softcover versions of Superman vs Shazam!, Superman vs. Spider-Man and Superman vs Wonder Woman
I didnt read this one but how would this fight last ? Alis punches wouldn't phase Superman. What'd he use kyptonite boxing gloves?
1. Supes and Ali fought, IIRC, under a Red Sun. Much like the Luthor v. Superman boxing match of the 60s (on the planet where Luthor was a hero and had a loving family).
2. I cut out and matted two pages of this book and had Neal Adams sign them at Comic-Con. SPOILER: The full page of Superman being carried out on a stretcher after getting his ass kicked by Ali is dramatic and beautiful.
3. When Ali lost to Leon Spinks just before publication, the book nearly got cancelled, supposedly.
4. Aside from a delicious sketch of Black Canary, this is my favorite Neal Adams work.
I'd love to see Superman vs Fedor Emelianenko. Make it happen DC!![]()
There is a great quote from Morrison where he talks about the book being so awesome just because of all the things they do just to make Ali come out on top. It's MK vs DCU all over again.
Rest assured, I never got to read this (WAAAAAY before my time), so I'm definately looking forward to this.
I think I recall Kurt Busiek once saying this was one of his all-time favorite Superman comics, as well.
I got a used copy on Ebay for $28, years ago. What I love best about this is that it really doesn't seem like a "gimmick" comic-book. This isn't like, say, the Amazing Spider-Man issue where he meets President Obama, or when Spidey team-up with the original Saturday Night Live cast, where they just come up with some contrived situation to put real-life people into a comic (not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, mind you). While DC undoubtedly just wanted to cash-in on Ali's popularity @ the time, Denny O'Neil took it seriously, and wrote a great story that stands on it's own. Even if the character in the story wasn't the real Muhammad Ali, and it was just Superman meeting some fictional Heavyweight Boxing Champion from the DCU, the comic would still be worth reading.
And, of course, if you're familiar with Neal Adams' artwork, I don't have to tell you how great that is.
Finally , DC publishes this. They should also reprint the superman vs shazam and superman vs wonder woman tabloids.
I've never had a chance to read this story after so many years. I'll be picking up the tabloid-size hardcover to better appreciate Neal's art.
Hope the other classic DC Treasuries mentioned above receive the same treatment.
There is no way this comic book holds up. Okay, I'll read it, but no through rose colored glasses. I have to read this just to see if it holds up.
It's classic Neal Adams art , what's not to like ?
Neal Adams even spoof his own cover for ESPN magazine.
Story is typical alien threatens to destroy the world if those 2 don't fight. See Ali beat the snot out of superman and then superman stops the alien invaders.
Superman vs Shazam! was also historic , they finally have the 2 of them fight for real after teasing so many times with a winner at the end.
