Default CBR: Straczynski Launches "Superman: Earth One"

    J. Michael Straczynski spoke with CBR about his dream gig in comics, "Superman: Earth One," including what he has planned for Jimmy Olsen, why Superman doesn't wear a mask and what (or who) was responsible for the destruction of Krypton.

Nice interview. Will pick up the book but seriously, September 2010 release? This late?

I really like the idea presented of a cause for the destruction of Krypton... sounds suitably ominous!

Not to pee on anyone's bonfire; but this sounds like such a good idea surely it must have been done before?

I'll give the comic a shot but to be honest I have serious reservations and already hated the idea

I would have preferred JMS did one of 3 other characters

Batman (his tv works suits Batman style story telling and would bring him back into the lead)

Wonder Woman (like his mix of modern culture and classic mythology in the Thor run)

or Green Lantern (his epic scifi style story telling would work wonders here)

Superman = wrong type of character and JMS is the wrong guy for the wrong job
Plus Superman's popularity is shot, he's over exposed, people never cared for a Superman returns, his stories have been done to death and I agree with what Joss Whedon says about the character.

128 pages, not ll of it is drawn yet, all of which still need to be inked, colored, and finalized.

September 2010 is a prompt release.

If a lot of the pages are incomplete, DC shouldn't announce this project so early. We have to wait nearly a year for this GN to be on sale

I'm so happy JMS is getting the opportunity to play with DC's toys. Except for a few plot points during its run(which supposedly had a lot to do with editorial interference), I feel his work on Spidey was the best done for that hero since Busiek's Untold Tales. Along with an artist definitely on his way up, this is going to be hard to wait 9 months for. I just hope that JMS doesn't slow the project down or abandon it for Hollywood(although he's been in it for years and still only has 2 screenplays to his name, so maybe he's not a flight risk).

JMS is all about all about humanity, the nature of heroism, and trying to inspire the reader. He's an absolute perfect fit for Superman.

Personally, I've always felt that the back story about the destruction of Krypton was unnecessary to understanding Superman and the Superman mythos. The fact he came from "outer space" in a rocket ship is enough to create the stranger in a strange land aspect of the story. He was an orphan whether his home planet blew up or not. It would have actually made for a more interesting story as to the mystery of where this child came from and why was he sent to Earth. This could have originated in a quest to discover his home planet and family.

Exactly, JMS may be known for B5, but in general his writing has been has been about heroism and ethics and humanity, a great to explore with Superman in my opnion.

In one of the more recent interviews the artist said he had done 80 pages already.

A year is a year to build up hype. Because it's a graphic novel it's all going out at once. A proposed September release date gives them a 3 month wiggle space to release it before Christmas even if it's delayed a little.

    Plenty of time.

A little interesting that DC have essentially launched Ultimate Superman and Batman while Marvel's line has gradually moved out of the spotlight.
