Default CBR: Waid's Electric Spider-Man Plans

CBR spoke with Mark Waid about his "Power to the People" arc of "Amazing Spider-Man" in which the Web-Slinger must contend with both the amped-up powers of his classic foe Electro and the villain's new status as a "Man of the People.

I like the art a lot, but I'm a little sad to see the new Vulture will be revisited. The new Vulture struck me as insanely banal compared to good ol' Adrian Toomes - and I've really enjoyed a lot of new villains. But the new Vulture, along with "Raptor," really do nothing other than add a little "EXTREME" to the pot, in a boring way.

The art is very nice. It makes up for the story too.

I've liked this arc more and more. Not even a big fan of Electro.

    Thumbs up

Great interview with one of the best writers in Amazing Spider-Man.
Cool to see that the Red Vulture will have his origin explained.
The art looks good, and the colouring can be seen that was done by a Eisner winner colourist.

This arc has been horrible. Its supposed to kick off "The Gauntlet" but It makes me wonder how special this event will be with such a horrid story-arc. I like Mark Waid , I have loved his Flash , FF , Captain America and other works ....but this is the shittest work he has ever produced.

What's your reasoning for feeling this way? What's so bad about the arc?

I'm loving this arc. The story is pretty damn good, and the art is fantastic. Spidey just gets better & better.

Well my feelings are basically summed up in these 2 brief reviews I made the last few weeks of ASM. Just overall dumb stories to send a political message. I told one pal in my LCS and he joked : "Bailouts ? Seriously ? What next , have Mysterio show up and go crazy over Obama's healthcare package ?"

    Anyhow...

Just a horrible storyline. I hope Gauntlet gets better , it can't get worse than this.

I think your assertion that ASM is a "joke book" now after one or two issues is really rash. You were raving about #611. And why is reflecting on the bailout issue bad? Marvel comics have always blended real-world problems into their comics.

I'm enjoying the art, it's a nice change of pace and has fit the story well so far. And as far as the story goes, I don't mind the bail out being used in the story. The Marvel U has always been a mirror to our own world, makes sense with as pissed as furious as some people seem at these Town Hall meetings that some Villain may feel the same way and try to abuse the anger of the masses for their own gain.

Well, I think based on this interview when it talks about something happening to a major New York city landmark, which the solicit for this issue also calls "one of the best-known and most beloved landmarks in the Marvel Universe" and how Waid says this will be a "dividing line between everything that's ever happened to Spider-Man and everything that ever will from now on," it all lead me to guess that the Daily Bugle, now the DB, is going to end up being destroyed as a result of Spidey's battle with Electro. That's what the first two parts have certainly been leading towards in my opinion, not to mention there's been hints in previous issues and in other interviews about the decline of newspapers in general. And since Peter no longer works for the Daily Bugle anyway and since most of the supporting cast is out of there as well, seems like that's what Marvel will go for to try and make the Gauntlet be one of those "nothing will ever be the same again" type stories we always get until things change back after a couple of years.

Also, as for Waid's upcoming two-part New Vulture story and saying that "Peter gets dealt a massive personal blow by the manipulations of 'The Gauntlet,'" I'm guessing it's got something to do with Aunt May. Especially when part of the solicitation for ASM #621 reads "and a malicious move by...AUNT MAY?!" My immediate reaction is that it sounds like Aunt May is going to be accused of committing a crime and sent to prison.
