Is Dodson's artwork really that bad?

Here's my take on his art from another thread:

Well IMO, aside from not drawing female characters as stick figures who can somehow impractically sport huge breasts and/or asses unlike many other artists, his art is good at conveying action and he tends to draw excellent backgrounds. His panels can come off detailed without being cluttered. Also, the art manages to come off very fluid.

Anyway, it looks like those Spider-Man and X-Men pics aren't showing up. Here they are again.

My biggest issue is his lack of distinction between characters, specifically females. Every face is exactly the same and that cover with the X-ladies just amplifies it. All with the slightly-chubby, 3/4 profile face turn. The art is a bit too clean, too. There's no scratchiness, no life to it all. It's like they're plastic in the panel (my biggest beef with Choi, too). A bit too perfect. Devoid of any soul.

I meant his female character actually have figures that are capable of supporting such, um... assets. Still, he's drawn small-chested females as well. I have to disagree on the figures. With both male and female characters, he actually tends to do a decent job giving them different frames. His Kitty doesn't look like his Emma, who doesn't look like his Mary Jane, who doesn't look like his Cheetah, who doesn't look like his She-Hulk. With females, this is a problem (Frank) Cho tends to suffer from. I'll give you the faces, though he seems to have improved on that.

I also must contend on the "clean" thing. I think that's mostly due to the style. A lot of artists excel in the "clean" style (i.e. Dodson, Amanda Connor), while a lot of artists excel in the "gritty" or "sketched" style (i.e. Mike Mignola, Frank Quitely)

naw - Dodson is a very good artist. and he can also draw panels that tell a story. unlike Land, who just draws one unrelated panel after another and puts them all on the same page. Land's panels actually confuse the story

In regards to the Land/Dodson artwork, why the hell can't Land understand that women are supposed to have hips not 12-year-old boy thighs? It's farking disgusting. Whoever said that Land's females are stick figures with ginormous silicon tits is spot on. Anyone who disagrees has watched too much porn and not studied enough anatomy.

Bring on the Dodson, at least his women have curves :)

(Land) I hate the fake smiles, the boy hips, the giant boobs. Do people really not like to look at real womens bodies? Why this fascination he has with anorexic models is beyond me.

It is not bad, by any means, but I personally do not like it too much. It is... too... blobby for my taste, I guess...

I like their art a lot, but they aren't artist I'm excited for either. But their art is consistant, they have their own style, and there is a life/energy to it. Can't ask for much more.

Other than that Spidey image, (angle does look like a beer gut, not exactly the lean Spidey image I'm used to) I don't think there's anything wrong with Dodson's style, in terms of its proportion, or ability.

The issue is that is the tone it sets. It comes off as light and fun. Depending on the title, or story, that doesn't fit. For example, I wouldn't want to see him on a Ghost Rider book, or on Daredevil.

However, on Spidey stories, or Ms. Marvel? He works really well.

Part of his Uncanny Run has been the scripts he's gotten. We seem to keep going into Cyclops' or Emma's mind for a cavalcade of cheesecake. (Scott had all the X-Women, Emma has herself as all the X-Women). And that can be distracting from an overall story, if you're not looking for wank-material.

Just my take. It's not bad, but it can be situationally good/bad.

Yet the irony is that my avatar bares his mark. Mind you, it's strictly because it's a recent image of Iceman.

I like his art, I just don't like how he draw women's lips. Well, the shape is fine, but it looks like everyone's wearing black lipstick. It clashes with the darkened nostrils.. I don't know, just those little things.

Overall, I don't really mind it. When paired with the right colorist, his art can really pop or look really washed out.

I really love that Ms.Marvel pic at the top. That being said...

I find Dodson's art to be very bubbly. It doesn't suit "danger" very well, in my opinion. I think a lot of time is looks too flat for me. I keep looking at it and trying to think of how to describe it. Part of me thinks if you take all the color away, that it looks like a coloring book with the big chunky black lines around the characters so you don't color outside the lines. I mean, how horrible would a Dodson sketch issue be? I just can't behind it.

I enjoy the covers and pin ups FAR more then their interiors, and while I think they do a good job at storytelling, I feel it fits only lite hearted stories.

His work is competent and consistent; he is capable of storytelling and drawing expressive characters rather than cut'n'paste poses or collages of figures; and his work is pretty individual, recognisable and stylised. But I'm afraid I just don't like it that much... I think the thick inking and facial styling are the main things that get me. There's nothing terribly wrong with it, but it just isn't to my taste. So no, while not brilliant, and not for everybody, Dodson's artwork isn't that bad...
