Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) Appreciation

I still have a theory that the acquisition of Marvelman into Marvel Comics may effect Carol and her name. If Marvel wants the Marvelman character to be a big deal, and I think they do, they may not want a "Ms. Marvel" character who has no connections to Marvelman. Especially if Marvel wants a Marvelman "family". I know there was a Kid Marvelman, a Young Marvelman, and a Miraclewoman. Will Marvel Comics be using such characters in the future as well? Quite possibly. So if there is a Miraclewoman/Marvelwoman character, would a Ms. Marvel character be redundant? I don't think so, but Marvel Comics may not see it that way.

So maybe Ms. Marvel got canceled not to relaunch her as Captain Marvel, but to relaunch her under a completely new name?

Of course, Spider-Woman isn't really related to Spider-Man, so I could be completely wrong about this theory.

Given the fact that the Dark Avengers Annual made a pretty big deal about Noh-Varr being the new Captain Marvel for real (as opposed to just playing the role for Osborn), to make Carol a Captain Marvel as well just seems redundant and, frankly, retarded.

I haven't read the DA Annual yet but I'm surprised that Marvel is finally getting around to pushing an actual Captain Marvel character again in the Marvel Universe.

And this also puts holes in my theory above.

So we're getting Noh-Varr as Captain Marvel. Then what becomes of Carol after issue #50? That's the million-dollar question.

I loved Ms. Marvel the character. The series is definitely up in my top 5. However, I'm not a huge fan of "Ms. Marvel" the name. It's just got a certain dated cheese to it that I've never liked.

I think Captain Marvel would be good for her. I think it would be a sign of coming into her own and taking on the mantle of her former mentor... a la Bucky Cap.

I guess we'll wait and see what Siege does to her. I have a feeling some questions might be answered there.

I think what I'm getting at is...

Captain Marvel is THE hero.

Ms. Marvel is the offshoot hero.

In saying that, I'm not talking about Mar-vel and Carol Danvers, but purely about "Captain Marvel" or "Ms. Marvel" as a concept and the image of a hero they represent.

Like I mentioned before, Captain America is THE hero. Bucky is the sidekick. The concept of Captain America has a great deal of meaning to people (and by people, I mean the average joe walking around the Marvel universe... not the readers). When Steve Rogers was killed, Bucky took the opportunity to step up and BE Captain America. He was no longer the sidekick, he was THE hero. (Or, y'know, until Steve comes back.)

There will always be comparisons between Cap Cap and Bucky Cap. Bucky Cap will never be an independent identity. But, as Captain America, Bucky becomes something greater than he was... conceptually speaking. He has moved up a step in the heroic hierarchy while still honoring where he came from. The theme of the next generation growing up to take the place of the previous is a common literary theme. I think that's what this is all about.

If Carol were to become Captain Marvel, I view it as her stepping up to take the place that she's earned, so to speak. She won't be the offshoot hero anymore, she will be THE hero.

I guess if 'coming into her own' meant severing all conceptual ties to Mar-vel... she'd have to go be Warbird again. I wouldn't mind that so much. I liked the name. But, the idea of Carol as Captain Marvel is growing on me!

The Ms. Marvel name was an offshoot name when Carol first debuted AS Ms. Marvel, and for a time after that. But given the massive amount of history between then and now, I think it's not only safe to say that she's made the Ms. Marvel name unique and separate (but still connected to/inspired by) from Captain Marvel and his legacy, but that going back now and changing her name to Captain Marvel would be saying, basically, that she's too good for the name now. And that would be unfortunate for Carol.

Besides, Noh-Varr is Captain Marvel now, so for Carol to change her name to Captain Marvel as well would be a little ridiculous and redundant.

Hey Tassa Kay quick question, is that name related to a Battletech Dark Age character?

I really feel that Marvel dropped the ball in letting her solo get run down so badly by lack direction, non sensical tie ins, and a writer who just seemed to have lost his edge with the char. The premise for Ms Marvel being the best of the best was such a great idea, essentially a springboard to catapult her to turning into DC's equivalent of Wonder Woman. A leading lady who earned it by being the BEST. I mean any hero in the MU using the word Marvel in their name SHOULD be iconic or getting there.

I mean, why else would they have pushed so hard to get the Marvelman name back.

Plus Carol's outfit is so damn snazzy

Well i still think it's gonna be a very dangerous move changing her name.
If she becomes Captain Marvel would be cool? Yes. She'll have the strongest name ever! BUT people will always remember Captain Marvel as the man.. not her..

And as i said... Ms Marvel is the perfect name for her, in my opinion. She is well known. And most of the people don't remember Captain Mar-vell.She can still be Ms Marvel and Still be the best of the best!
