Default CBR: BACC: Jim Steranko Q&A

Known for his innovative and sometimes controversial work for Marvel comics on titles such as "Captain America" and "Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.," Jim Steranko recalled key moments from his career in comics and stage magic at Big Apple Comic-Con.

Steranko held a seminar at one of the old Big Apple Cons in Penn Plaza, and I got to speak to him briefly during one of the breaks.

This guy truly is a rock star.

I saw Steranko in 1979 when he was the star guest at a comic convention in Birmingham, England. The guy has a massively over-inflated ego, but is a real showman, and gives great bang for the buck. He reminded me a little of Shatner, with his exaggerated pauses in the telling of past stories, which would then be succeeded by a phrase like: "A 4 page double-spread!" that he let hang in the air, so the fans could absorb the full essence of his genius.

An experience not to be missed if you ever get the chance to see him. I'll be eagerly awaiting that Shield collection.

I had so much fun a the show with him, both at the panel and at his booth. I'd never heard the Ferris wheel story before, and he tells it (and all of his stories) with such panache and aplomb.

Did anyone else happen to notice him commiserating with Joey Q at one point? :D!

Just last night, I finished re-reading a collection of his Strange Tales run, including that "4 page double-spread" which actually worked like a four-page centerfold in that collection. Steranko really broke some new ground with his highly-experimental SHIELD stories, while dabbling in so many other areas, including jazz and stage magic. I wish he could have stayed at Marvel longer.

Steranko was one of the greatest things that ever happened to Marvel. He's led a far more adventurous life than Lee and Hefner put together. When I grow up I want to be like this man.

I love that Steranko/Lee story. It's nice when Stan's jovial facade drops, but you still see he's an okay guy.
