The Civil War series is what got me to like Cap. I had always figured Cap was nothing more than a lame character made for propoganda, but CW changed my views on that. The idea that the symbol of good in America was fighting the government seemed pretty awesome to me. Then I realized there is a lot more to him as a character. I like that he was just some kid who wanted to help, to do good. He's the ultimate underdog hero. Since the CW series I've gotten all the issues Brubaker has written thus far and it's been my favorite series for a while.
Even though he's a solider, he has this "aww shucks" attitude about him. I'm especially excited for the movie because they really seem to be playing on that side of him.
You get your contrast of CW Cap and what he has become in Heroic Age.
Just at the end of CW, Cap turned into the obedient servant again, got shot, and died. When Cap was reborn, it wasn't to resist the government, anymore, as it was to push the case of helping his friends. Even if Steve Rogers was affected by his time shifts while lost in the time stream, Steve still had the wherewithall to look at the super heroes with a plan to amalgamate them into the establishment rather then leave them high and dry as renegades, and it was this that drove Steve to be like the Tony Stark of CW - working with the authoities to make a deal for the super humans.
So what was wrong with Steve Rogers as the CW started? Two things.
One - there wasn't any deal being made by the government with super heroes as it was an ultimatum, (and Steve wasn't going to make this deal from a position of weakness)
Two - the whole thing of the SHRA was against the principles and laws of the what the country of the USA was founded on. That everybody gets a fair go. The British didn't do that and neither did MU Bush.

Visited NY and DC and saw Spider-Man Turn off the Dark.
I've never been a huge fan of Cap but I'll say this about him. He's the only hero where it really doesn't matter if he has powers or not. And it's not about him being a great leader or strategist. He's just a good man. Completely moral and upstanding and you know that if you're following Cap you're going to end up doing the right thing. I'd say he trumps characters like Superman and Spidey even though they're very noble characters. People follow Cap greatfully.
The Avengers are the mightiest super heroes around. And they all follow Captain America without question.
(completely ignoring that little Civil War dealie...)
Not the 616 cap but still ...

now that steve has returned, i guess, as cap, I want to see some more gadgets like he had as "super soldier"..
I didn't know this thread was here. I'm a big Cap fan! I wonder why this thread isn't getting that much love.![]()
I've been reading and collecting Cap for 26 years now. The first Cap issue I ever got was from a 25 cent bin was Captain America #105. It wasn't in the best shape but it started my love for Cap. I've collected and read many things but Cap has been that one constant in my collection. I love what Steve stands for. As has been said numerous times he just does the right thing. For me it's not about that he was a super soldier or had a shield. It was about that behind the mask he's a lot like you and I. Steve just wants to do the right thing. That's what drew me to him many years ago. That's what continues to fuel my passion for the character today. I'm looking forward to see where Bru and McNiven take us for this next chapter in Steve's life.
So how do you guys perfer Cap?
As the clearly superpowered hero he is in the Ultimate verse (and was in the 70's) or as a "mere" peak human?
Meh Marvel's american super hero and main face will always be Spider-Man to me.
Capt is just bland.
