Why do you like Cap now? Steve Rogers has undergone a lot of changes since Brubaker started his run, and Bendis started on Avengers, so what makes Cap so enjoyable today?

I never liked Cap much to the point I would go out and buy his comic, but once I saw that Bucky was coming back, I think that's what changed Cap for me. To this day, if anybody asked me what makes Cap interesting, it is because Bucky was back in Steve Rogers life, and that interaction changes Steve Rogers, because it now sets up a contrast between Rogers and Barnes, and Barnes shines a light on Rogers that was never there before. You take that contrast away from Rogers, and he just devolves into an uninteresting, generic, gymnast, with good leadership qualities. But on his own, without Barnes around to bounce off, Rogers doesn't have enough interest to carry a book, to my mind.

It will be interesting to see how many of Bucky's support cast make into Caps new book, when it starts up, because Falcon has had some real potential, and Black Widow was always good for slapping Cap (Bucky) in the face with wise advice, now and then. Rogers, by himself, doesn't need any advice and comes off as too well rounded and straight, (not in the sexual sense, but in the moral sense). It's going to be interesting how Brubaker can sustain the same amount of drawing power now that Ed doesn't have Bucky to add any drama to Steves history.

Steve is a great character and I'm sure Brubaker can find a lot of interesting ways to work with him but for me, I'm still surprised just how quickly and how deeply I've grown to be attached to Bucky! He's (was? :( ) flawed and imperfect--he'd never ever be able to grow into Steve's shoes when he took the mantle up and he knew that, but he dived into it and gave it his best shot anyway. I know we've had John Walker, etc but having him carry the shield was also a way to explore the concept of Captain America and how it's different from Steve Rogers (which I humbly feel that Brubaker has been doing since the start of his run; passing the mantle to Bucky just helped emphasize it).

So to answer your question, Bucky-Cap and Commander Rogers have been a huge part of the reasons why I've enjoyed Cap today. Unpopular opinion, I think, but I like the shake up in the status quo (which however is still going to reassert itself now).

I'm still pissed at how they offed Bucky but I'm still along for the ride for this new chapter. With the movie coming out and stuff I can't help but feel the positive energy--that this is gonna be a great year for Cap.

Steve Rogers/Captain America has been my top hero for decades--literally. I've enjoyed his stories since the Lee/Kirby days and I have hung with him in the many subsequent highs and through some fairly depressing lows. For me Cap IS the hero of the MU.

As to my enjoyment today--well, it is because Bru is presenting a Cap that surpasses nearly every other chapter in the character's long, long history. I've not enjoyed Cap this much since the first Waid/Garney take on the character. I'm in full agreement with your assessment of Rogers and Barnes--Bru has brought something new to the dynamic between this particular duo. Each complements the other. Like you, I hope we will see Sam and Tasha in the new CA series; but I have hopes that Bru isn't done with Bucky yet. It seems that there have been too many intrigues--too many concepts laid in place to simply smash him with a hammer and proclaim--"Okay, that's it! We're done!" That upcoming backstory gives me hope that Bru has many, many stories to tell in the present-day with James Buc--the end is not yet.

Well, that's my hope--BTW, well written post.

God I love CA.

What I don't love is this. I have almost a full run of Captain America, I am only missing around 100 or so to have them all.

So now with the new series starting and the original run continuing with 620 or 621 (?), which series do I collect to keep my Captain America run complete?

Don't say both, that's not the answer I want. Chances are I'll be getting both.

This is why I hate them constantly rebooting series.

I say go with the new one. Its more directly link to Captain America and will continue the run. Captain America and Bucky is more on the past and I don't expect it to last to much longer.

That's alright.

Never the less I liked those Kirby days of Cap, in cell block 13, and the return of the Red Skull, back from the Golden Age, and, actually to see those two, Strucker and Skull, in the Brubaker Fear Itself Prologue was good too.
