As someone who doesn't like Namor, I think that is bad splash page. He just looks like a roid-rage jerk who needs to get hit by a Black Panther plot device. But I guess if you're a Namor fan and believe in what the X-Men are doing, I guess it's an awesome splash page. I feel sorry Namor and Namor fans because it looks like he's being set up to go down the river.
As both a Namor and Black Panther fan, this worries me. The more I think about it, they are setting Namor (and seemingly Emma and Illyana down the line) to be the fall guy(s) for all the bad stuff in this event. Wakanda is just lucky enough that it gets to be wrecked and they will probably come out and say that was the only technologically advance city within the country.
At the very least, this will hopefully move Namor outside of the X-Men sphere of influence, as very few of the main X-Men writers seemed to give him a distinct voice and none of them really gave him anything to do.
So no, I wasn't trolling. If I was being unclear, sorry. These posts are dashed off. But to me, it just looks like they are getting ready to burn Namor down a few issues later, and as I've said in other posts, that's what concerns me with this event.
But no. There's no Namor story in the X-books. The triangle rarely even works, cause all Emma does is talk about Scott -- and Scott just ignores them. Whatever appeal it has is carried on Namor's sheer outrageous sexuality. Atlantis might as well not be there. Not a single connection of Namor's extensive connections is ever mentioned, much less used.
But to be fair, MOST the mutants have no story in the X-books right now. They all are used to support the story of Scott and Wolverine and the mutant survival plot that has been barreling towards AvX for years. OTOH, I really don't think there would have been a story for Namor in Bendis' Avengers either, nor would he have had a distinct voice, or been as amusing.
The way stories are written today, it's rare to see a Namor story, or the complexity of Namor's character, except in his own ongoing. Instead we get the thin cardboard characterization we see in AvX.
As far as Namor being the fall guy, I doubt that will happen. Marvel is far too invested in Cap and Cyke being the focus and taking the blame. It's not about Namor. It's about how Namor's actions reflect on Scott. There's a GREAT opportunity for a cool Namor and T'challa story here, just as there was when Namor and Storm were caught up in AoX and in a relationship. That got mindwiped away. This will similarly get handwaved away.
As for Wakanda ... well, Marvel brushed off any effect of them losing their vibranium, I think this event will get the same. Ditto the effects of the Serpent in FI, and it's destruction of the capitols of the world. And as a fan of both Namor and BP, you're guaranteed to enjoy this fight, one way or another.
Well, obviously some Namor fans feel that way, but Namor's actions thus far aren't completely OOC, because he's done these things in the past. I can see the motivation for his actions, they even state it on the page, but many people would rather ignore it, because it doesn't fit their black and white view of superheroes. Just like they ignore that Namor isn't a typical superhero, he's a prince of an alien culture.
There's nothing to be apprehensive about Namor cast in the role as invader of the surface world and fighting super heroes -- it's been done countless times and obviously, Namor's not going to wholly succeed -- he never does. What I worry about is HOW it's done. If it's another VS, or that Hellfire brat nonsense, or the buffoon tourniquet, or stupid dehydration powder (yet again), or any number of other crappy showings, no, I won't be happy. But then again, Marvel's given me plenty of practice in surviving disappointment.
And that may be why I love that double page spread so. It's Namor in terrible majesty, NOT getting crapped on for once.
For awhile now I've been disappointed by the way Marvel has treated Namor. He's actually one of my favorite characters and he just never seems to get his cool moment in a cross over. I remember House of M, he got easily beaten there. It was just embarrassing as a Namor fan.. Anyway, so I just read AvX and it seems like more of the same old bull.
I hope the King of Atlantis gets his due one of these days.
"The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side. Oh joy! Rapture! I got a brain!" -Ray Bolger as The Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz.
yeah, if fellow Namor fans don't want to see him get beat down then stay away from todays issue of AvX.
Also: I will always love Namor for what he did to Rulk.
personally, i was very pleased with namor's showing in today's issue.
i think it was pretty inevitable from the start that the phoenix five will be defeated in some way. but, namor had some awesome moments, got to break red hulk's arm, fight scarlet witch to a draw, and traded some nice barbs with black panther.
my only grudge is ben's attitude towards namor....completely uncalled for, but at least that's been consistent throughout the series.
